Chapter 10 - A Future Unbroken

Two years later.

The scent of roasting turkey, cinnamon, and fresh-baked pumpkin pie filled our spacious home.

It was Thanksgiving Day. Our house was filled with warmth, music, and the quiet hustle of a real, loving family preparing a holiday meal together.

In the kitchen, Jessica stood by the wide island counter, rolling out pie dough with smooth, practiced movements. Next to her stood Olivia, now seven years old, wearing a small white apron, carefully dusting flour onto the board with a wooden spoon.

There was no fear in this kitchen. No scalding water. No cruel demands or coercive threats. Only warmth, shared jokes, and lighthearted laughter.

I stepped into the kitchen carrying a platter of fresh fruit, setting it down beside the cutting board. I wrapped an arm around Jessica's waist and pulled her in for a quick kiss, making Olivia roll her eyes and laugh.

"Ew, gross! Not in front of the pie, Dad!" Olivia teased, shaking her flour-covered wooden spoon at me.

"Hey, I have a license to kiss the chef," I laughed, stealing a small piece of apple from the bowl. "How's the crust coming along?"

"It's going to be the best pie ever," Olivia announced proudly, pointing at her work. "Because Mommy and I made it together."

"It certainly is, baby," Jessica said, smiling softly as she brushed a stray lock of hair from Olivia's forehead.

The doorbell rang, echoing cheerfully through the foyer.

"I'll get it!" I said, wiping my hands on a towel and walking down the hallway.

I pulled open the heavy wooden front door. Standing on the porch were Detective Vance and his wife, Sarah, carrying a large bottle of cider and a bouquet of autumn flowers. Over the last two years, Vance had become a close family friend—a trusted guardian who had helped save my family and had remained a pillar of support in our lives ever since.

"Zayden!" Vance smiled warmly, shaking my hand with a firm, strong grip. "Happy Thanksgiving, man."

"Happy Thanksgiving, Robert," I said, stepping aside to let them in. "Come on in, the kitchen is absolute madness, just the way it should be."

As Vance and Sarah walked into the living room, greeting Jessica and Olivia with warm hugs, my phone vibrated in my pocket.

I pulled it out and looked at the screen. It was an official email notification from the Federal Bureau of Prisons Automated Victim Notification System (VNS).

I stepped out onto the quiet back patio for a moment to open the message.

The notification read:

VICTIM NOTIFICATION SYSTEM UPDATE

Inmate Name: FERRIS, CARMEN

Register Number: 48921-008

Status: Transferred to Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Aliceville, Maximum Security Unit.

Current Sentence: 65 Years State / 25 Years Federal (Consecutive).

Parole Eligibility: NONE.

I stared at the screen for a few seconds.

There was no hatred left in my heart. No burning desire for revenge. The anger that had fueled my fight through the courtrooms, the interrogations, and the federal investigations had completely cleared away, leaving behind only a profound, silent peace.

Carmen Ferris was where she belonged—locked away in a place where she could never again harm another human soul. She was a footnote in a dark chapter that had long since been closed.

I deleted the notification, slid the phone back into my pocket, and looked up at the vast blue sky stretching over the Arizona desert.

The air was crisp and clean. The mountains stood tall and permanent in the distance.

From inside the house, I heard the sound of laughter—Jessica’s bright, rich voice blending with Olivia's sweet giggles, accompanied by the clinking of glasses and the warm chatter of true friends gathered around a full table.

I took a deep, full breath of the cool air, turned around, and walked back inside, closing the door behind me, stepping into the bright, unbreakable light of my home.
