Chapter 8 - The Garden in Bloom

Two years after the night I stood in the shadow of the porch trees listening to my husband’s champagne party, the Greenwich house had completely transformed.

The old dark heavy curtains had been replaced with airy white linen that danced in the spring breeze. The formal living room, once filled with Evan’s expensive leather furniture, was now a vibrant, light-filled family room with plush blue sofas, overflowing bookshelves, and framed artwork created by Sophie and Noah.

Outside in the backyard, my father and Daniel had spent the weekend building a massive wooden pergola over the brick patio. Clusters of purple hydrangeas—Aunt Evelyn’s favorite flowers—bloomed in rich, vibrant clusters along the garden wall.

It was Sunday afternoon, and the smell of grilled chicken and fresh herbs filled the warm air.

Sophie, now nine years old, was sitting under the pergola, teaching eight-year-old Clara’s daughter how to sketch flowers in a hardcover sketchbook. Noah was kicking a soccer ball across the green lawn with Daniel, his laughter echoing clearly across the yard without a trace of hesitation or fear.

My father sat on the porch bench, sipping a cold lemonade, watching the children play with a look of quiet, unadulterated peace.

Rachel Kim walked out through the French doors, carrying a tray of fresh fruit and iced tea. She set it on the patio table and sat down beside me on the outdoor sofa.

“The State's Attorney called this morning, Maya,” Rachel said, taking a sip of tea. “Linda’s appeal for early parole was denied. She’ll be serving the remainder of her four-year sentence in the state correctional facility.”

I took a deep breath of the spring air, feeling the warm sunshine on my face. My left cheek was smooth and unblemished now; the bruised shadow had vanished long ago, leaving only the clear, healthy skin of a woman who was fully alive.

“I don't think about them anymore, Rachel,” I said honestly.

“I know,” Rachel smiled, touching my hand. “And that’s the ultimate victory.”
