Chapter 6 - The Broken Bond

Stripped of his business, evicted from his house, and drowning in bank debts, Daniel was forced to rent a tiny, dingy one-bedroom apartment on the industrial outskirts of the city. The wallpaper was peeling, the plumbing rattled like a dying engine, and the street below echoed with the constant rumble of night traffic.

Vanessa had refused to live there with him. She had returned to her parents' house, but that offer was short-lived; two days later, the bank foreclosed on Richard Sterling’s mansion, forcing her entire family into a temporary extended-stay motel.

On Friday evening, a torrential rain hammered against the fogged glass of Daniel’s apartment window. He sat on a threadbare sofa, holding a lukewarm cup of instant coffee, staring at the floor. His phone lay on the stained coffee table, displaying fifty unread text messages from creditors, collection agencies, and former friends who wanted nothing to do with him.

The door handle rattled, and Vanessa walked in without knocking. She was soaking wet, her expensive designer coat ruined by the rain, her mascara running down her face. She slammed the door behind her and threw a folder of legal documents onto his lap.

"Sign them," she demanded, her voice hoarse and cold.

Daniel looked down at the documents. The bold letters at the top read: PETITION FOR DISSOLUTION OF MARRIAGE.

"Divorce?" Daniel said, a bitter, hollow laugh escaping his lips. "We’ve been married for less than a week, Vanessa."

"There is no 'we' anymore, Daniel!" she yelled, pacing through the tiny living room. "You are completely broke! Your father stripped you of everything! You have no money, no connections, no future! My father is facing criminal charges for fraud because of your family!"

Daniel slowly stood up from the sofa. For the first time in months, the fog of his obsession with her had lifted, replaced by a cold, brutal clarity.

"My father didn't do this to your dad, Vanessa," Daniel said, his voice eerily calm. "Your dad was a fraud who over-leveraged his business. And you... you’re a parasite."

Vanessa slapped him across the face. The sharp crack echoed through the small room.

Daniel’s head snapped to the side, but he didn't strike back. He merely turned his head back, looking at her with total, unadulterated contempt.

"Is that all you've got?" Daniel asked softly. "Because three days ago, I watched you cry like a baby because your dress tore in front of two hundred people. You thought you were so smart, didn't you? You thought my parents were simple peasants you could step on."

"Sign the papers, Daniel!" she spat, tears of anger rolling down her cheeks. "I want half of whatever assets you have left!"

"Half of what?" Daniel laughed bitterly, spreading his arms wide to show the tiny, dark apartment. "This is all I have, Vanessa! A fifty-dollar sofa and three hundred dollars in my checking account! Take half of that if you want!"

Vanessa stared at him, realizing for the first time that there was truly nothing left to bleed out of him. The illusion was completely, utterly dead.

"You’re a loser, Daniel Vance," she whispered, grabbing her bag and backing toward the door. "You always were. You were just hiding behind your daddy’s shadow."

"At least my father is a real man," Daniel replied, his voice breaking slightly as the truth finally crushed his ego. "Get out."

May you like

Vanessa slammed the door shut, her heels clicking rapidly away down the echoing hallway.

Daniel fell back onto the sofa, burying his face in his hands as loud, violent sobs finally wracked his chest. He cried for the home he had lost, the business he had ruined, and the foolish, arrogant coward he had allowed himself to become. But most of all, he cried for his mother—the woman who had sacrificed everything for him, whose hand he had let go just to chase a ghost in a silk gown.
