Chapter 9 - The Head of the Table

The grand dining hall of the Moretti manor was fully restored.

The high arched windows were sparkling clean, casting warm evening light over the long, polished mahogany table. Sitting along both sides were thirty people—the capos, their wives, Mateo, Maria, and the loyal lieutenants who had stood by Santino during the darkest days of the purge.

The tables were piled high with steaming platters of roasted meats, fresh pasta, handmade bread, and bottles of fine Italian wine. Laughter and lively conversation filled the air, replacing the cold, terrified silence that had haunted the room months before.

At the far end of the long table—at the very head of the room where August had once sat like a tyrant—sat Santino.

Beside him, sitting proudly on a boosted wooden dining chair, was eight-year-old Nora. She wore a beautiful yellow dress, her dark hair tied back with a velvet ribbon.

Santino stood up, taking his silver butter knife and gently tapping the side of his crystal glass.

CLINK. CLINK. CLINK.

The lively conversation in the hall instantly died down. Every capo, every wife, every soldier turned their eyes toward the head of the table with complete, genuine respect.

Santino looked around the room, taking in the faces of the men and women who formed his true family.

"A year ago," Santino began, his voice deep and warm, echoing through the hall, "this house was built on fear. It was built on the idea that power means hurting those weaker than you, that loyalty is forced through terror, and that family is something to be traded for ambition."

He looked down at Nora, who was looking up at him with wide, idolizing brown eyes.

"I learned the hard way that a home built on fear will eventually destroy itself from within," Santino continued, raising his glass of red wine high into the air. "Tonight, we start a new chapter. In this house, we protect our children. We honor our promises. And we respect every person who sits at this table."

Santino turned directly to his daughter, offering her a warm, proud smile.

"Nora," Santino said softly, his voice carrying across the silent room. "This is your family. And this table will always belong to you."

The entire dining hall erupted into loud cheers and applause. Capos raised their glasses, shouting toasts to the young Don and his daughter.

"To Don Santino! To Princess Nora!" Mateo cheered, raising his glass high.

"To the family!" the crowd roared back in unison.

Nora beamed with pure joy, her face glowing under the soft light of the chandeliers. She reached out her small hand and squeezed her father’s fingers.

"Daddy?" she whispered over the noise of the celebration.

Santino leaned down close to her. "Yes, my love?"

May you like

"I like the big table now," she said, her small smile bright enough to melt the coldest winter.

Santino picked her up, holding her close against his chest as the room continued to celebrate around them. "So do I, tesoro. So do I."
