Chapter 8 - The Awakening

At 1:15 PM, Dr. Evelyn Monroe pulled open the glass doors of the pediatric recovery unit.
She had removed her surgical cap, her short silver hair slightly messy, but her face carried a bright, triumphant smile.
"Mr. Carter," Dr. Monroe called out.
Daniel bounced out of his chair instantly.
"She’s out of surgery," Dr. Monroe announced, stepping forward to shake his hand. "The malformation has been completely removed. There was zero internal bleeding, and no damage to the surrounding neural tissue. The pressure on her brainstem is entirely gone."
Daniel’s knees buckled. Amelia caught his arm, steadying him.
"Can I... can I see her?" Daniel choked out, tears running freely down his face.
"She’s in recovery room 4," Dr. Monroe smiled. "She’s waking up from the anesthesia now. And yes, she’s already asked for her yellow bear."
When Daniel and Amelia stepped into Room 4, the afternoon sun was streaming through the window, painting the pale yellow walls in golden light.
Lily was lying in the center of the bed, her head wrapped in a white surgical bandage, but her face was no longer pale. A healthy, soft pink glow had returned to her cheeks. Her hazel eyes were open, wide, bright, and completely clear.
"Daddy?" Lily whispered, her voice tiny but wonderfully clear.
Daniel rushed to the side of the bed, dropping to his knees, taking her tiny hand in both of his, pressing hot, desperate kisses against her fingers. "I’m here, sweet pea. Daddy’s right here."
"My head doesn't hurt anymore," Lily murmured, a slow, beautiful smile spreading across her lips. "The dizzy clouds went away."
"They're gone forever, baby," Daniel sobbed, pressing his forehead against the edge of the mattress. "They're never coming back."
Lily looked past her father’s head, her bright eyes fixing on Amelia standing near the foot of the bed.
"Ms. Grant?" Lily called out softly.
Amelia stepped forward, smiling through her own tears. "Hi, Lily."
"Did you tell the doctor to feed the fish?" Lily asked innocently.
Amelia laughed—a genuine, warm, ringing laugh that echoed through the room. "I did better than that, Lily. I talked to the head doctor, and as soon as you're ready to walk, we're going to take a giant trip to the New England Aquarium to see the sea turtles."
Lily’s eyes sparkled with pure joy. "Yay!"
Dr. Monroe stepped up behind Amelia, checking the heart monitor displays. "In six weeks, she’ll be running around the playground like nothing ever happened, Mr. Carter. She has a full, healthy, beautiful life ahead of her."

Daniel looked up from his daughter’s hand, looking at Dr. Monroe, then turning his head to look at Amelia.
The dark, suffocating fog that had enveloped his life for three long years had finally dissolved, leaving behind a sky filled with infinite, brilliant light.
