Chapter 26 - The Paper Trail

Paulie’s sworn affidavit provided the critical breakthrough Sarah Lin needed to breach Vanguard’s legal fortress.
Working through the night in the back office of Bellweather, surrounded by cold coffee cups and stacks of court filings, Sarah tracked the financial chain of custody behind the bribe paid to Paulie.
"Eleanor Vance is too smart to pay bribes directly from Vanguard’s primary accounts," Sarah explained, tapping her glowing monitor screen as Rowan and Celia leaned over her shoulders. "She used a shell company registered in the Cayman Islands called Aegis Strategic Management."
"The same shell company Marcus used to buy Rowan’s bank loan!" Celia recognized the name instantly from her earlier investigation.
"Exactly," Sarah said, her eyes alight with the thrill of discovery. "And because Eleanor used Aegis to execute the bribe within state lines, she committed a predicate act under the Federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act. This isn't a civil land dispute anymore, Rowan. This is systematic, ongoing corporate extortion."
"Can we prove Eleanor personally authorized the transfer?" Rowan asked.
"Not with standard financial records," Sarah admitted, her face falling slightly. "The digital signature on the Aegis transfer is encrypted using a two-factor corporate token held exclusively by Vanguard’s Senior Managing Director. We need the raw server log from Vanguard’s local field office in Pittsburgh to match the timestamp of the transaction."
"The field office?" Celia asked. "Where is it?"
"In the top floor of the Apex Tower downtown," Sarah said. "It's a fortress. Armed security, biometric access, zero public access."
Rowan looked at the clock on the wall. The federal appellate hearing was scheduled for 9:00 AM the following morning. They had twelve hours.
"We don't need to break into the fortress," Rowan said quietly, a calculated look entering his dark eyes. "We just need to make Eleanor bring the server log to us."
"How?" Celia asked.
Rowan looked at Celia, his expression utterly steady. "By filing a formal notice of corporate asset surrender. We invite Eleanor Vance to Bellweather tonight to sign the transfer papers."

Celia stared at him in disbelief. "Rowan, are you insane? If we offer to surrender, she wins!"
"She only wins if she leaves with the title," Rowan replied, a sharp, dangerous smile finally appearing on his lips. "She won't leave with the title, Celia. She'll leave with a federal indictment."
