Chapter 8 - The Viper's Strike

The dawn that broke over the Marchetti estate was a pale, icy silver that bled through the heavy glass windows of the Rose Suite. Dileia hadn't slept a single wink. She had spent the entire night pacing the floor, her ears strained to catch the distant rumble of the ocean waves and the terrifying, imaginary sounds of gunfire in the dark.
At exactly six in the morning, the heavy double doors of the suite swung open.
Salvatore walked in. He looked exhausted, his shoulders slightly hunched, his hands covered in grease and the faint scent of diesel fuel. But when his dark eyes found her standing by the window, wrapped in his silk pajamas, a profound, visible wave of relief washed over his rugged features.
"Is it done?" she asked softly, her voice trembling as she stepped toward him.
"It’s done," he said, stepping into the room and closing the doors behind him. He didn't approach her immediately, keeping his distance as if he were afraid the soot on his clothes would stain her innocence. "Brenda is on a boat. She will never see this city again, Dileia. And she will never hurt another soul for a paycheck."
Dileia let out a long, shuddering breath, her body going weak with relief. She crossed the room, ignoring the dirt on his jacket, and threw her arms around his waist, burying her face into his broad chest. Salvatore froze for a fraction of a second, his body unaccustomed to such unconditional affection, before his massive arms came around her, crushing her against him with a desperation that shook his frame.
"Thank you," she whispered against his sweater. "Thank you for not killing her."
"I did it for you, Dileia," he murmured into her hair, his eyes closing as he inhaled her scent of lavender and clean skin. "I wanted to pull the trigger. Every instinct in my blood screamed to end her. But I remembered your eyes. I realized that if I killed her, I wouldn't be able to look at you this morning without seeing her ghost between us. You saved me twice in twenty-four hours, little server."
Before they could enjoy the quiet embrace, a sudden, shattering explosion rocked the north wall of the estate.
The massive stone foundations of the mansion shuddered, the heavy glass windows vibrating violently as the distant wail of tactical sirens erupted from the courtyard below. The orange glow of a massive fireball reflected against the glass, painting the morning sky in a horrific shade of artificial dawn.
"Ambush!" Salvatore roared, his arms instantly locking around Dileia’s waist as he threw both of them onto the floorboards, shielding her body with his own as a spray of plaster dust rained down from the ceiling. "The Falcone family... they bypassed the cliffside sensors! They’re launching a full-scale assault on the house!"
The heavy, rhythmic thud of automatic gunfire erupted from the main staircase—deafening, terrifying, like a hundred jackhammers tearing through the stone walls of the palace.
"Marcello!" Salvatore yelled into his wrist-communicator, his hand reaching into his waistband to draw his matte-black pistol.
"They breached the main foyer, Boss!" Marcello’s voice came through the static-heavy radio, accompanied by the chaotic screams of dying men and the roar of shotguns. "Don Falcone brought his personal death squad! They used a military-grade thermite charge on the iron gates! They’re heading straight for the East Wing!"
"Secure Giana!" Salvatore snarled into the radio, his eyes turning to Dileia with a look of raw, unadulterated terror that she had never seen on his face before. "Marcello, if a single bullet touches my daughter, I will burn this entire hemisphere to ash! Get her to the subterranean vault now!"
He looked down at Dileia, his hands catching her shoulders with a grip that was tight enough to bruise. "Dileia, listen to me. The closet behind the bed... there is a false back panel. It leads to a narrow iron ladder that descends into the old smuggler's tunnel beneath the cliffs. Take Giana and run. Do not look back. Do not wait for me."
"No!" she cried out, her fingers catching the fabric of his sweater as tears blurred her vision. "I'm not leaving you, Salvatore! They will kill you!"
May you like
"They can try," Salvatore growled, his jaw tightening into an expression of savage, primitive fury as the sound of footsteps approached the double doors of the suite. "But they forget that a viper is most dangerous when it is cornered in its own nest. Run, Dileia! Protect my daughter!"
He stood up, spinning around to face the doors just as they were blown off their hinges by a shotgun blast, entering the fray with a roar of violence that filled the room like thunder.
