Chapter 10 - The Gala of the New Dawn

The Grand Ballroom of Callaway Tower was a palace of light, music, and elegance. The celebration tonight wasn't a political fundraiser or a corporate buyout gala; it was the annual benefit for the Chicago Harbor Development Trust, and the city's entire business elite had turned out in full force.
At the center of the room stood Roman Callaway, the legendary developer, drinking champagne with Sullivan Castellano. The two men, who together controlled the majority of the city’s commerce and infrastructure, stood side-by-side, their old rivalries completely replaced by a powerful, mutually beneficial alliance.
"The port integration has increased the neighborhood employment rates by thirty percent, Sullivan," Roman said, raised his glass in a respectful toast. "Your new administrator is doing remarkable work."
"She’s not just my administrator, Roman," Sullivan said, a proud, unyielding smile touching his lips as he looked toward the grand entrance of the ballroom. "She’s my wife."
The double doors opened.
Hollis Castellano walked into the room, and a collective whisper of admiration moved through the crowd. She wore a stunning midnight-blue velvet gown that cascaded to the floor like a winter night sky. Around her neck was a simple, breathtaking collar of brilliant diamonds—a gift from her husband on their wedding day three weeks ago. She looked royal, noble, a woman who had conquered the city not through fear, but through an absolute, unshakeable dignity.
Beside her walked Wynn, wearing an elegant silver silk dress, her arm linked with Mrs. Marguerite, who looked radiant in a deep purple lace gown, her old legs completely forgotten as she walked with the posture of a queen.
And running a few steps ahead of them was six-year-old Posy. She wore a beautiful white tulle dress with a small tiara in her messy curls, looking like a miniature princess. In her hands, she clutched her old, faded cotton blanket with the star pattern—the blanket she had refused to leave in the car, the blanket that had started it all.
Sullivan stepped away from Roman, crossing the ballroom floor with long, purposeful strides. The crowd parted for him automatically, but his eyes never left his wife.
He reached out, catching Hollis’s hand, pulling her into his arms as the orchestra began to play a slow, romantic waltz.
"You're late," he murmured into her hair as they began to move across the polished floor.
"Posy had to find the blanket," Hollis smiled, her eyes locking onto his with a deep, endless warmth. "She said the party wouldn't be complete without the stars."
Sullivan looked over her shoulder at his sister, who was currently dancing with Davis, Roman Callaway’s head of security, her laughter ringing clearly over the music. He looked at Posy, who was currently showing her star blanket to Roman Callaway himself, the billionaire property owner listening to the little girl with a look of genuine, amused wonder.
Sullivan pulled his wife closer, his hand resting securely against the small of her back, his heart full.

"We came through the storm, Hollis," he whispered softly against her ear.
"We didn't just come through it, Sullivan," she replied, her face leaning up to receive his kiss as the music swelled around them. "We built a new world out of it."
