CHAPTER 2 — THE MEN WHO CAME FOR OLIVER

The security feed flickered across the mansion’s monitor.
Three black SUVs.
Engine idling.
Headlights cutting through the mist like pale knives.
No one moved.
No one spoke.
Inside the Harrington estate, the silence felt suffocating.
William Harrington stood perfectly still, his eyes locked on the screen.
Claire placed herself instinctively closer to Oliver.
The boy was shaking so violently it looked like he might collapse.
“They found me…” he whispered again.
William turned sharply.
“Who found you?”
Oliver didn’t answer.
His lips trembled.
His small hands clutched the edge of the table like it was the only thing anchoring him to reality.
Claire crouched beside him.
“Oliver, you’re safe here,” she said gently.
But the words didn’t land.
Because outside, danger didn’t care about promises.
The intercom crackled again.
“Sir,” the head of security spoke urgently. “They’re requesting entry.”
William’s jaw tightened.
“On what grounds?”
A pause.
Then—
“They say the child belongs to them.”
Claire felt a chill run down her spine.
William’s eyes darkened.
“Belongs?”
The word alone was enough to change the air in the room.
Oliver flinched.
Claire immediately placed a hand on his shoulder.
“No one belongs to anyone,” she said firmly.
But William wasn’t listening anymore.
His mind was already working through scenarios.
Kidnapping.
Trafficking.
Custody dispute.
Or something worse.
The investigator’s earlier warning echoed in his head:
“They weren’t social workers.”
William turned to security.
“Do not open the gates.”
“Yes, sir.”
The line went dead.
Outside, one of the SUVs rolled forward slowly.
Then stopped directly in front of the gate.
A man stepped out.
Tall.
Broad-shouldered.
Dressed in a black suit that looked too expensive for a normal official visit.
He didn’t look at the cameras.
He looked straight at the mansion.
As if he already knew exactly where the boy was.
Inside, Oliver let out a strangled breath.
“No…” he whispered.
Claire noticed immediately.
“Do you know him?”
Oliver shook his head.
But his eyes said something else.
Fear.
Recognition without words.
William leaned closer.
“Oliver, listen to me.”
The boy’s eyes flickered toward him.
“You are safe in this house,” William said firmly. “No one comes in unless I allow it.”
For a moment, something like calm flickered across Oliver’s face.
But only for a moment.
Because then—
The man outside raised his hand.
And knocked once on the gate.
Not aggressively.
Not urgently.
Just once.
As if he had all the time in the world.
The sound echoed strangely through the security system.
Then the man spoke.
Even through the speakers, his voice was calm.
Measured.
Certain.
“Oliver Carter,” he said.
The boy flinched violently.
Claire froze.
William’s eyes narrowed.
The man continued.
“We know you’re inside.”
Silence followed.
Then—
“We are not here to hurt you.”
A pause.
A slight tilt of the man’s head, as if he were addressing a child through glass.
“We are here to bring you home.”
Oliver shook his head rapidly.
“No… no…”
Claire held him tighter.
William stepped forward.
“Identify yourself,” he ordered into the intercom.
The man finally looked up at the camera.
And smiled faintly.
“My name is Director Marcus Vale.”
The name meant nothing to Claire.
But it meant something to William.
Because men with “Director” in their title did not visit private estates for casual reasons.
Marcus continued.
“That child is part of an active federal protection case.”
William’s eyes narrowed further.
“Federal protection?”
“Yes.”
Another pause.
“And he has been missing for seven days.”
Claire looked down at Oliver.
Seven days.
Barefoot.
Starving.
Alone.
That didn’t sound like protection.
That sounded like failure.
William’s voice sharpened.
“If he is under federal protection, why is he here?”
Marcus’s expression didn’t change.
“Because he ran.”
The word landed heavily.
Oliver flinched again.
Claire felt his fear deepen.
William glanced at the boy.
Then back at the screen.
“What did you do to him?” William asked coldly.
For the first time, Marcus’s smile faded slightly.
“We did not harm him,” he said. “We are trying to prevent harm.”
“That is not an answer.”
Marcus stepped closer to the gate.
Rain began falling harder.
“You have no authority to keep him,” he added.
William’s voice dropped dangerously.
“This is my property.”
“And that is a child under federal jurisdiction,” Marcus replied calmly.
The two men stared at each other through cameras and steel gates.
Neither blinked.
Inside, Claire whispered to Oliver.
“Did they take you before?”
The boy hesitated.
Then nodded once.
Barely.
William noticed immediately.
“Oliver,” he said quietly, “did they have you in custody?”
The boy’s voice cracked.
“They said it was safe…”
Claire’s eyes widened slightly.
“But it wasn’t,” Oliver added.
Silence fell again.
The truth was beginning to form.
Piece by piece.
William exhaled slowly.
“Why did you run?”
Oliver’s eyes filled with tears.
“I heard them talking.”
“About what?”
The boy’s voice dropped to a whisper.
“About me being moved.”
Claire frowned.
“Moved where?”
Oliver shook his head quickly.
“I don’t know.”
But his fear said otherwise.
William turned back to the camera.
“You’re not taking him anywhere until I verify every document you have.”
Marcus nodded.
“As expected.”
Then he lifted a folder.
“We already anticipated that.”
He handed it to one of his men.
The man walked forward and placed it into a secure document slot at the gate.
A digital scanner activated.
Inside the mansion, the system received the file.
Claire and William watched as the estate’s internal screen opened it automatically.
Pages appeared.
Official seals.
Government headers.
Case files.
Then—
A photograph.
Oliver.
Hair neatly combed.
Clean clothes.
Smiling.
Claire’s stomach tightened.
William studied it carefully.
The image looked staged.
Too clean.
Too controlled.
Oliver noticed it too.
“That’s not me,” he whispered.
William looked down at him.
“What do you mean?”
“I wasn’t smiling,” the boy said firmly.
The room went still.
Even Claire noticed the implication.
Someone had constructed that image.
Or manipulated it.
William’s expression hardened.
“Where did this photo come from?” he demanded.
Marcus responded immediately.
“Standard intake documentation.”
William shook his head.
“No child looks like that after what he went through.”
Marcus’s voice remained steady.
“You are not qualified to judge federal records.”
William leaned closer to the screen.
“And you are not authorized to enter my property.”
A tense silence followed.
Then Marcus spoke again.
Calmer this time.
“Mr. Harrington.”
“Yes?”
“There is something you should understand.”
A pause.
“This child is not what you think he is.”
Claire felt Oliver stiffen instantly.
William narrowed his eyes.
“Explain.”
Marcus hesitated.
Then said the words that changed everything.
“He is not just a runaway.”
The rain outside intensified.
Lightning flashed across the sky.
And Oliver whispered something so softly only Claire heard it.
“They lied…”
William turned sharply.
“What did you say?”
But before Oliver could answer—
A second voice came through the intercom.
Different.
Stronger.
Colder.
“We’re done negotiating.”
Claire’s blood ran cold.
Marcus stepped aside.
And from the second SUV—
A man emerged.
Older.
Military posture.
Eyes like stone.
He looked directly at the mansion.
And said one sentence that froze everyone inside:
“Bring us the child… or we come in for him.”
William’s face darkened.
Claire pulled Oliver closer.
And Oliver began to cry.
Because whatever was coming next…
May you like
was no longer a request.
It was a declaration of war.
