Chapter 5 - The Freezing of the Empire

At exactly 9:01 a.m., my phone rang again. It was my mother.

I stood inside the glass atrium of the federal courthouse, Julian Cross standing right beside me, holding a signed stack of federal orders. I pressed answer.

“Time’s up, Mia,” Eleanor Vance said, her voice dripping with venom. “The health inspectors are already parking outside Chloe’s family restaurant. Your retraction letter has not been published. You chose poorly.”

“Tell the inspectors to look behind them, Mother,” I said, looking out the glass window toward the city skyline. “Because the IRS is currently parking outside Vance Logistics.”

A heavy silence fell over the line.

“What did you say?” Eleanor gasped, her aristocratic composure finally failing her completely.

“As of five minutes ago, a federal judge signed an emergency asset forfeiture order under the RICO Act,” I said, every word delivering a profound sense of satisfaction. “Every single bank account associated with Vance Logistics, Richard Vance, Eleanor Vance, and the Delaware shell companies has been frozen. The corporate headquarters is currently being locked down by federal agents executing a search warrant for tax evasion and wire fraud. You don't have the money to pay those health inspectors, Mother. You don't even have the money to pay your power bill tomorrow morning.”

“You... you monster!” Eleanor screamed, her voice cracking with pure terror. “You’ve destroyed us!”

“No,” I replied softly. “I just stopped you from destroying me. Goodbye, Mother.”

I hung up the phone and pulled the SIM card out, tossing it into a nearby recycling bin.

Julian looked at me, giving me a supportive nod. “The financial trap is secure, Mia. But your father isn't the type to go down quietly. When a man like Richard Vance realizes his wealth is gone, he becomes incredibly dangerous. He still has his personal freedom until the formal indictment is unsealed tomorrow morning. We need to secure your physical safety.”

“He knows about the cabin,” Chloe said, walking up to us with a look of sudden panic. “Ethan saw my car heading north last night. If Dad realizes he’s lost his company, he’ll go to the cabin to find Mia.”

“Then we don't go back there,” Julian said, his expression turning grave. “You two are staying at my private residence downtown. I have twenty-four-hour security guards on the property. We’ll have Marcus deploy a state police unit to the cabin to intercept your father if he attempts to show up there.”

As we walked out of the courthouse, I looked back at the massive marble pillars of the building. The wheels of justice were turning rapidly now, grinding the Vance family empire into dust. But deep down, I knew the final confrontation wouldn't happen in a sterile courtroom. It would happen when my father realized the daughter he had dismissed as a failure had completely systematically dismantled his entire life.
