Chapter 9 - The Promise

Grant didn't drop to one knee right away. He simply held the closed velvet box between us, his gray eyes searching mine with intense tenderness.
"Six months ago," Grant began softly, "I was a dead man walking. I was running a multi-billion-dollar empire, but my soul was completely hollow. My home was a cold prison, my daughter was trapped in silence, and I was too blind to see the danger right in front of me."
He raised his other hand, gently tucking a strand of brown hair behind my ear, his fingers brushing softly against my cheek.
"Then you came running down that hallway," Grant continued, a small, beautiful smile touching his lips. "You dropped your laundry, you risked your job, your safety, and your mother’s future, and you threw yourself into the fire to save my child. You brought truth back into this house. You brought sound back into Lily’s life. And... you brought warmth back into mine."
Tears gathered at the corners of my eyes, bright and warm. "Grant..."
"I love you, Emma," Grant said, his voice ringing with pure, unwavering conviction. "Not just because of what you did for Lily, but because of who you are. Your courage, your fierce heart, your grace under fire... you are the most incredible woman I have ever known."
He slowly dropped to one knee on the soft green grass, popping the velvet box open.
Inside rested a stunning, ethically sourced solitaire diamond ring, set in a band of delicate platinum intertwined with small rose-gold leaves—a design that looked alive, organic, and timeless.
"Emma Miller," Grant said, looking up at me with open vulnerability. "Will you do us the honor of becoming my wife? Will you share your life with us, not as a nanny, not as an employee, but as my equal, my partner, and the mother of this family?"
I covered my mouth with both hands, my tears finally overflowing, spilling down my smiling cheeks.
Before I could answer, a small voice piped up from behind the rose hedge.
"Say yes, Emma!"
We both turned and laughed. Lily was standing near the pond, holding her bag of breadcrumbs, jumping up and down with an enormous grin on her face. "Say yes! Say yes!"
Grant chuckled, looking back up at me, his eyes shining with hope. "You heard the boss."
I dropped to my knees on the grass in front of him, wrapping my arms around his neck, burying my face against his warm collarbone. "Yes," I whispered into his ear. "Yes! A thousand times yes!"
Grant let out a deep, triumphant laugh, wrapping his strong arms around my waist, lifting me slightly as he pulled me close. When he pulled back, he slipped the platinum ring onto my finger. It fit perfectly.
He leaned in, his lips meeting mine in a soft, passionate kiss that tasted of autumn air, sweet redemption, and new beginnings.
Lily came charging across the lawn, throwing herself into the middle of our embrace. Grant caught her easily, pulling her into his lap, so the three of us were wrapped together in one warm, tangled hug on the sunlit grass.

"We get to keep her forever?" Lily asked, looking up at her father.
"Forever and ever, little bird," Grant promised, kissing the top of her head.
