Chapter 9 - The Foundation of Healing

Six months after the collapse of Meridian Holdings, the Sophia & Lily Foundation held its inaugural charity gala at the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan.

The ballroom was breathtaking—draped in white silk, filled with candlelight, and crowded with politicians, judges, philanthropists, and medical professionals from across the country.

I stood near the edge of the dais in a custom Armani tuxedo, watching the room.

Up on the stage, Hunter stood at the podium. She wore a stunning floor-length emerald silk gown, her poise and grace commanding the attention of every person in the room.

"When we look at the face of pediatric healthcare and maternal protection," Hunter spoke into the microphone, her voice steady and resonant, "we often measure success in statistics, survival rates, and legal victories. But true success is measured in peace. It's measured in the right of every child to grow up safe, and every parent to watch them sleep without fear."

Applause rolled through the ballroom like rolling thunder.

I looked out across the crowd, feeling a swelling of pride I had never anticipated feeling in this lifetime.

When Hunter stepped down from the podium and walked toward me, her eyes were shining with unshed tears of joy.

"You were amazing," I said, handing her a glass of sparkling cider as she reached my side.

"I was terrified," she confessed with a nervous laugh, taking a sip. "Public speaking wasn't exactly part of my maid training."

"You were born to lead this, Hunter," I said, my voice dropping sincerity. "You saved my son. You saved this family. And now you're saving hundreds of others."

She smiled, setting her glass down on a passing tray, and reached out to take my hand. "We did it together, Lorenzo."
