Chapter 6 - Crucible in the Swells

The next three hours were a blurred nightmare of blood, steel, and high-stakes survival.

The Callahan battered through fifteen-foot ocean swells. Every time the ship pitched, the medical team had to brace themselves against surgical tables while maintaining absolute precision with needles, scalpels, and cautery units.

Sarah operated while standing on one leg, leaning her hip against the heavy steel operating table to take the weight off her torn, healing abdominal muscles. Sweat soaked through her surgical cap. Her face was deathly pale, but her hands were steady as rocks.

"Artery clamped," Sarah announced calmly, sealing off a massive femoral bleed on a young marine engineer. "Voss, tie this off!"

Voss stepped in instantly, his earlier arrogance completely gone, replaced by a profound, reverent respect for the woman working beside him. He tied the suture with fast, precise fingers.

"He's stable!" Voss shouted over the sound of the storm. "Pulse returning!"

"Next patient!" Sarah ordered without pausing to catch her breath.

Suddenly, the ship took a violent, unexpected roll to the port side. A rogue wave slammed against the hull with the force of an artillery shell.

CLANG!

A heavy ceiling-mounted surgical light broke from its safety latch and swung wildly down toward an unconscious patient on the middle table.

Without a second thought, Sarah lunged forward, throwing her own body over the open surgical wound of the patient to protect him.

The heavy metal light housing struck Sarah squarely across her back and shoulders.

Sarah let out a choked gasp of pain as she collapsed across the patient's legs. The sheer impact tore her fresh abdominal sutures. Dark blood instantly began to seep through the front of her surgical scrubs.

"CAPTAIN!" Voss screamed.

Two corpsmen rushed forward, pushing the heavy light fixture away.

Voss caught Sarah as she slipped off the table. He saw the red stain spreading rapidly across her midsection. "Your incision reopened! You're bleeding out! We need to lay you down right now!"

"No..." Sarah gasped, her sight swimming with red dots. She looked across the room. "The... the last burn victim... he has a compromised airway... he needs an emergency cricothyroidotomy..."

"I'll do it!" Voss yelled, tears of stress and awe welling in his eyes. "I will do it, Captain! Lie down!"

"Show me..." Sarah whispered, grabbing Voss’s collar with a white-knuckled grip. "Show me you can do it..."

Voss looked into her fierce, uncompromising eyes. Something snapped inside him—the fragile pride of an insecure officer was instantly burned away, leaving behind a real doctor.

Voss turned to the burn victim, grabbed a scalpel, and performed a flawless, lightning-fast surgical airway incision, inserting the breathing tube in less than fifteen seconds.

"Airway secured!" Voss shouted, looking back at Sarah. "Airway secured, Captain!"

Sarah looked at the patient’s chest rising and falling rhythmically. A faint, tired smile touched her lips.

"Good... job... Doctor..." Sarah whispered.

Then her eyes rolled back, and she went limp in Voss’s arms.
