Chapter 9 - Justice Served

The two corporate guards instantly raised their weapons, opening fire on our position.

RAT-TAT-TAT-TAT!

Sparks flew off the iron support beams above us as Miller and I dove behind a heavy steel shipping container. Miller leaned around the corner, firing four precise shots, striking the first guard in the shoulder and forcing him back against the engine cab.

The second guard scrambled down the iron ladder of the train, attempting to flank us around the side of the container.

I waited until the sound of his heavy boots reached the edge of my steel cover.

As he rounded the corner, his weapon raised, I slammed the heavy steel pry-bar with full force into the side of his knee. The guard screamed as his leg buckled, his gun clattering across the concrete. Before he could recover, I drove my fist straight into his jaw, knocking him cold against the stone floor.

I grabbed his dropped weapon, threw it to Miller, and sprinted directly toward the moving train.

The locomotive had begun to roll slowly forward, its heavy steel wheels screeching against the track as the driver opened the throttle.

Vance was standing on the rear metal platform of the engine, holding his briefcase, watching the distance between us widen.

"You're too late, Alex!" Vance laughed maniacally, his voice echoing over the roar of the diesel motor. "I built this city! I own the judges, the police, and the land under your feet! You're nothing but a driver!"

I didn't answer. I sprinted along the loading platform, leaped across the six-foot gap between the concrete ledge and the moving train, and caught the lower iron railing of the engine car with both hands.

My feet swung wildly over the heavy steel wheels below, but I gritted my teeth, pulled myself up, and climbed onto the catwalk.

Vance’s eyes widened in sudden terror as I stood up on the narrow iron deck, dripping wet, bruised, and relentless.

He dropped his briefcase and pulled a compact silver pistol from his belt, aiming it directly at my chest.

"Stay back!" Vance screamed, his aristocratic composure entirely gone, replaced by the wild panic of a trapped animal. "I'll shoot you! I swear to God I'll shoot you!"

"You took my wife," I said, stepping toward him, completely ignoring the gun pointed at my heart. "You tried to steal my daughter’s future. You turned my family against themselves."

"She was collateral damage!" Vance shrieked, pulling the trigger.

CLICK!

The gun jammed—a mechanical stovepipe failure caused by a loose casing.

Before Vance could clear the chamber, I closed the distance and drove my shoulder directly into his torso, slamming him hard against the outer steel bulkhead of the locomotive.

The pistol flew from his hand, bouncing off the deck and disappearing down into the roaring tracks below.

Vance gasped for air, scrambling backwards against the metal railing. He looked up at me, his face pale, his expensive hair soaked with rain and sweat, seeing for the first time that his money, his status, and his corporate empire were completely powerless against a husband seeking justice.

"Alex... please," Vance begged, his hands raised, his voice cracking with pure desperation. "Ten million dollars! In the briefcase! It’s offshore bearer bonds! Take it! Take it and take Lily anywhere in the world! Just let me walk away!"

I looked down at the briefcase, then back into Vance’s terrified eyes.

"My wife’s life wasn't for sale," I said softly.

I grabbed Vance by the front of his jacket, pulled him to his feet, and threw him face-down onto the steel grating of the platform, pinning his hands behind his back with one knee.

SCREEEEECH!

Ahead on the tracks, heavy steel barriers slammed down as three State Police tactical vehicles breached the end of the freight terminal, blocking the rail line completely. The train driver threw the emergency brakes, bringing the heavy locomotive to a grinding, shuddering stop.

Dozens of state troopers and federal agents flooded the tracks, their rifles trained on the engine car.

Detective Miller climbed up the iron ladder onto the platform, holding a pair of heavy steel handcuffs.

He looked down at Vance, then up at me, a deep, victorious smile breaking across his face.

"I'll take it from here, Alex," Miller said softly.

Miller clicked the cuffs tight around Vance’s wrists, pulling the disgraced executive to his feet.

As federal agents dragged Richard Vance down off the train in chains, the man who had ruled Silver Creek with fear and corruption wept openly, his corporate empire completely shattered in the dust of the rail yard.

I stood on the catwalk, taking a deep, long breath of the cool morning air, feeling the heavy shadow that had hung over my life finally begin to lift.
