Chapter 6 - The Secret of the Ledger
I sank into the leather chair, turning the yellowed pages with shaking hands.
Clara was not just my daughter, my father had written. She was the Third Vessel of the Sterling Lineage. Our family wealth was secured in 1888 through an unholy Covenant made by my grandfather with a secretive cabal known as the Society of the Woven Mark.
Every three generations, a child born to the direct bloodline carries the Signature. That child is meant to be the 'Keeper of the Ledger'—a living anchor for the family trust, held in total isolation at the Sterling Manor on Blackwood Isle, subjected to continuous legal exploitation to ensure the family fortune remains undivided and tax-exempt.
If another child in our line is born with the mark, hear my final warning: DO NOT LET THEM TAKE HER TO BLACKWOOD ISLE. To free the child, you must destroy the Original Ledger—the 1888 Charter held in the vault beneath Blackwood Manor. Without the Ledger, the Trust dissolves, and the mark loses its legal power.
Suddenly, a cold voice echoed behind me. "He was always a terrible planner, your father."
I whipped around. Standing in the doorway was a tall, silver-haired man with an ivory-headed cane. Behind him stood Eleanor Vance and three armed guards.
"Hello, Maya," the old man said coldly. "I am Arthur Sterling. Your grandfather."
"Get out of my parents' house," I said, stepping between him and the desk.
"This house was built with Sterling money," Arthur said softly. "Your father was a sentimental fool. A family of our stature survives through discipline. Through sacrifice." He extended a gloved hand. "Where is the infant?"

"You will never touch her," I spat. "I know about the Ledger, Arthur. I know that if I reveal your illegal trust structure to the press, your empire will be torn apart!"
Arthur chuckled darkly. "Who do you think owns the news outlets in this state? Who do you think funds the District Attorney?" He nodded to his guards. "Bring the children down. It is a long boat ride to Blackwood Isle."
