Chapter 4 - The Sealed Wing

The drive back to Vale House was spent in absolute, suffocating silence.

Adrian drove his Mercedes through the black, rain-slicked turns of the estate road, his mind racing through every memory of the past four years.

Every conversation about his father's estate. Every late-night session where Celeste had helped him review Malcolm’s private trusts. Every time she had gently steered him away from liquidating certain legacy accounts and pushed him toward exploring the family's oldest holdings.

She hadn't loved him.

Or had she?

“I don't want the Vale name, Adrian,” she had told him under the stars in Martha's Vineyard two summers ago, her head resting against his chest. “I just want a life that belongs to us.”

Was it a performance? A cold, calculated chess move executed by a woman who had sacrificed her entire youth to dismantle the family that had destroyed her mother?

Adrian parked the car in the underground garage beneath the east wing.

Instead of taking the main elevator up to the living quarters, he took a heavy brass key from his pocket—a key his father had carried on his personal ring until the day he died—and unlocked the heavy iron door leading to the abandoned west wing of the estate.

The west wing had been sealed shut in 1998, shortly after Adrian turned eleven. Malcolm had claimed the foundation was settling and required structural reinforcement, but the work was never completed.

The air inside the dark hallway was freezing, smelling of dust, decaying mortar, and dry rot.

Adrian clicked on a high-powered tactical flashlight, his beam cutting through the thick darkness. He walked down the long, carpeted corridor, his boots leaving clear footprints in the decades of accumulated dust.

He reached the end of the hall—a dead end terminated by a heavy mahogany door reinforced with a modern digital keypad.

The digital keypad was glowing faintly green.

Adrian knelt down.

Beside the doorframe, freshly pressed into the thick layer of dust on the floorboards, was the distinct print of a woman's slender leather boot. Size six.

And beside the boot print lay a tiny, discarded scrap of paper—a torn corner of an archived Vale Family Office memorandum, stamped with the red ink of Malcolm Vale's personal seal.

The keypad hadn't been installed by Malcolm thirty years ago. It had been installed recently. And the green indicator light meant it had been unlocked within the last twenty-four hours.

Adrian reached out his trembling hand, entering his father’s old military birthdate into the key pad: 1-0-1-4-4-2.

The lock gave a heavy, hydraulic click.

The heavy oak door swung inward, revealing a flight of narrow stone steps leading down into the subterranean dark beneath the mansion.
