Chapter 6 - The Truth Exposed

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” Samuel snarled, his face inches from Marcus’s, his knuckles white with rage.

Marcus struggled to regain his composure, his hands pressing against Samuel’s wrists. “Sir—boss—let go! I’m just executing the regional asset consolidation plan you requested this morning!”

“I requested the regional asset trust deeds so I could transfer the deeds to the families living on this block, not bulldoze their homes!” Samuel shouted, shaking Marcus violently before shoving him back against the car door.

Clara watched from the porch, her breathing ragged, her hand pressed over her pounding heart. Emma and Lily clung to her skirt, terrified by the sudden violence unfolding before them.

“You... you lied to me,” Clara whispered.

Samuel turned around, his expression softening into an expression of desperate anguish as he looked at her. “Clara, no. I swear to God, I didn't send him. Marcus acted independently.”

“Did I?” Marcus smoothed down his jacket, regaining a thin veneer of corporate arrogance even as he adjusted his glasses. He looked at Samuel with a cold, challenging stare. “And who authorized the background check on the Wilson family yesterday, Boss? Who signed off on the commercial zoning reclassification for East Detroit last month? You can’t separate yourself from the machine, Samuel. You built this empire on ruthless efficiency. You don't get to play savior to a dying childhood friend just because guilt caught up to you.”

Samuel stared at his COO, the harsh truth cutting through his defenses. Marcus was right about the machine—he had built an empire that crushed small towns like Oakwood without blinking. But he had never authorized the destruction of this house.

“You’ve been funneling corporate real estate acquisitions through shell companies to pad your own portfolio behind my back for six months, Marcus,” Samuel said quietly, his voice dropping into a chilling, lethal register. “I saw the preliminary forensic audit on my desk this morning before I caught the chopper.”

Marcus’s face finally lost all color. “You... you audited me?”

“I audit everyone,” Samuel said. He reached into his coat pocket, pulled out his phone, and dialed a number on speaker. “Arthur? This is Samuel. Have the federal marshals and the corporate security detail secure the Boston headquarters and freeze all of Mr. Sterling’s assets immediately. He’s terminated for corporate espionage and fraud.”

Before Marcus could lunge for his briefcase, two unmarked local police cruisers—summoned by an automated security alert from Samuel’s private detail—pulled up behind the sedan, their red and blue lights flashing silently against the peeling blue paint of the house.

Four officers stepped out, moving swiftly to flank Marcus and place him in handcuffs.
