Chapter 10 - The Mistress of Moretti Hall

One year later.
Autumn had returned to Massachusetts, painting the trees surrounding the Moretti estate in brilliant shades of amber, gold, and crimson.
The grand dining room, once a cold hall watched over by portraits of dead, ruthless men, was now filled with warmth, laughter, and light.
At the head of the long mahogany table sat my wife, Elena Moretti. She wore a comfortable cream sweater, her dark hair glowing in the sunlight streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows.
In her arms she held our two-month-old daughter, Isabella—a healthy, beautiful baby girl with dark hair and bright blue eyes that matched mine.
Sitting around the table were the estate staff, Marco, Dr. Reynolds, and Elena’s mother, enjoying a festive Sunday lunch together. The strict, oppressive barriers that my father had constructed decades ago had been completely dismantled.
I stood near the sideboard, pouring fresh tea into a porcelain cup.
I walked over to the head of the table and set the tea cup gently beside Elena’s plate.
Elena looked up at me, a warm, radiant smile gracing her lips. "Thank you, my love."
"No spills today?" Marco teased from across the table, holding up his glass in a toast.
The entire room erupted into good-natured laughter.
Elena laughed softly, leaning her head against my arm as I wrapped my hand over hers. "No spills, Marco. Just peace."
I looked around the room—at the happy faces of the people who kept my home alive, at the bright sunlight reflecting off the polished silver, and finally down at my wife and daughter.
Camille Vance had thought power came from fear and control. She had thought that a ring on her finger made her superior to those who served her.
She was wrong.
True power was the ability to protect those you loved, to build a home where honor mattered more than money, and to find the woman who could turn a cold fortress into a place of unconditional love.
I leaned down and kissed my wife’s forehead softly as our daughter cooed in her sleep.
The storm was over.

The Moretti name was finally at peace.
