Chapter 2 - The Mirage of Sisterly Love

The realization hit me like a physical blow, shattering the foundation of the last three years of my life. I had built an empire of retail furniture stores, surrounded myself with luxury vehicles and high-end real estate, all while the woman I loved was picking up aluminum cans in the mud to keep my crippled father alive.

“Why didn't you call me?” I sobbed, placing my forehead against my father’s fragile knuckles. “Hannah… why didn't you call the police? Why did you take this all on yourself?”

“Call you?” Hannah let out a bitter, lifeless laugh that echoed off the damp walls. “Ethan, the last time I tried to speak to you, you had your private security team drag me out of your corporate headquarters. You stood at the top of the marble stairs and told the world I was a thief and a whore. You threatened to put me in prison if I ever stepped within a mile of your family again.”

Every word she spoke was a mirror reflecting the monster I had become. The hundred-dollar bill I had crumpled and thrown into the muddy puddle outside burned in my conscience like acid.

“When the county shelter called me six months ago,” Hannah continued, leaning against the small wooden table, “they told me an elderly man had been dumped from an unmarked van in an alley behind the free clinic. He had no ID, no wallet, only a torn piece of paper in his pocket with my maiden name on it. He remembered me, Ethan. When his own daughter threw him away like trash, his broken mind remembered the woman you discarded.”

“I’m calling the police right now,” I said, pulling out my phone with shaking fingers. “I’m calling the FBI. I’ll have Melissa arrested before midnight.”

“Put the phone away, Ethan,” Hannah commanded sharply.

I paused, looking up. “Why? She poisoned my father! She stole millions!”

“Because Melissa isn't working alone,” Hannah said, pulling a worn black leather notebook from her backpack. “And if you rush in now like the arrogant, hot-headed man you’ve always been, her legal team will wipe the floor with you. She already has medical power of attorney. She has court documents declaring your father mentally incompetent and legally dead for insurance purposes.”

“What?!”

“She collected on his six-million-dollar life insurance policy three weeks ago,” Hannah revealed, holding up a newspaper clipping of an obituary. “According to the state of North Carolina, Walter Vance died in a private hospice care facility in Raleigh last month. You’ve been paying thirty-five hundred dollars a month for a ghost, Ethan. And if Melissa finds out Walter is still breathing, he won't survive the night.”
