Chapter 3 - The Confrontation in the Hall

When I stepped out of the surgical wing into the private waiting area, Eleanor and Arthur rushed toward me like drowning people reaching for a lifeline.

Eleanor’s face was blotched red, her manicured hair disheveled. Arthur was clutching a styrofoam cup of black coffee that was shaking so violently the liquid sloshed over the rim, staining his knuckles.

"Is she... is she alive?" Eleanor gasped, reaching out to grab my arm.

I took a sharp step back, avoiding her touch entirely. "The surgery was successful. We repaired the hemorrhage and removed the damaged tube. She is resting in the PACU and will be moved to a private room shortly."

Eleanor let out a ragged sob, dropping her face into her hands. "Oh, thank God. Thank God!"

"Thank Dr. Zhao and the trauma team," I corrected coldly.

Arthur stepped forward, his eyes wide with a strange, panicked mix of shame and grief. "Emily... we didn't know. We thought... we thought you left school. We thought you moved away with..." He trailed off, unable to even speak the absurd lies Claire had spun five years ago.

"You didn't know because you chose not to check," I said, my voice ringing clearly through the quiet waiting room. "I sent you transcripts certified by the university registrar. I sent you my exam scores. I gave you the phone number of the Dean of Student Affairs."

"We never got them!" Eleanor cried out, looking up with raw, confused desperation. "We never saw any transcripts, Emily! Claire said you were using fake envelopes to trick us! She said you were trying to get us to give you money for..."

"Claire took the mail," I interrupted. "Just like she took my tuition funds."

"What are you talking about?" Arthur’s voice hardened slightly, his old defensive instincts flaring up. "Don't accuse your sister of stealing when she's lying in a hospital bed! She’s been taking care of us! She’s been managing the house!"

"She's been managing your ignorance," a sharp, composed voice called out from the hallway entrance.

We all turned. Daniel walked toward us, wearing a sharp charcoal suit, carrying a heavy black leather briefcase under his arm. His tall, broad frame instantly dominated the small waiting area. He stood directly beside me, taking my hand in his and sliding his fingers through mine.

Eleanor blinked, staring at Daniel in confusion. "Who... who are you?"

"I am Daniel Bennett," Daniel said, his voice cold, measured, and entirely destitute of mercy. "I am Emily's husband. The man whose wedding invitation you threw in the trash three years ago."

Arthur swallowed hard, looking between Daniel and me. "This is a family matter—"

"You forfeited the right to call this a family five years ago, Mr. Bennett," Daniel said, opening his briefcase with two sharp clicks. He pulled out a thick, tabbed white binder and held it out toward my father. "This is a forensic audit of the Arthur Bennett Sr. Educational Grandchild Trust."

May you like

Arthur stared at the binder, refusing to take it. "What is this?"

"This," I said, looking my father dead in the eye, "is the reason Claire spent five years making sure you never spoke to me again."
