Chapter 3: The System That Tried to Hide It

The first call was made before sunrise.

Not by Alejandro.

By his lawyer.

Then another.

Then an emergency child welfare report that could not be ignored.

By morning, the mansion was no longer a home.

It was a site under investigation.

Jimena sat in the formal living room.

Calm again.

Recomposed.

Like someone trying to rebuild a collapsing identity through posture alone.

“You’re destroying this family,” she said softly.

Alejandro stood across from her.

“No,” he replied.

“You already did.”

The investigators arrived at 9:14 a.m.

They did not speak much.

They observed.

They documented.

They asked to see the children.

Immediately.

When they saw Valeria’s feet, one officer went still.

When they saw the empty kitchen inventory, another wrote faster.

When Camila whispered “we’re not supposed to be hungry,” the room changed temperature.

Jimena watched it all.

And for the first time—

she was not the center of interpretation.

She was the subject.

“You will misunderstand this,” she said quickly. “They are emotional children.”

The investigator looked at her.

“Children don’t fabricate malnutrition,” he replied.

Silence.

That was the beginning of her collapse.

Not emotional.

Procedural.

Alejandro stayed with his daughters through every step.

He did not let them out of sight.

Not once.

Not because he didn’t trust others.

Because he didn’t trust systems anymore.

That night, Valeria asked him:

“Are we in trouble?”

Alejandro knelt.

“No,” he said softly.

“You are safe.”

May you like

A pause.

“Finally.”
