Chapter 8 - The Gala of Light

One year after the tragic night of the poisoned glass, the grand ballroom of the DeLuca estate was once again filled with light, music, and guests.
However, the atmosphere was entirely different.
There were no shadowy mobsters, corrupt judges, or cold socialites vying for status. The guests were doctors from Children’s Memorial Hospital, teachers, local artists, community leaders, and families supported by the newly formed Claire Arden Foundation for Children's Health.
The glass roof showed a clear, star-filled spring night over Lake Michigan.
Cassandra Vale stood near the grand piano, wearing an elegant dark blue gown, sipping sparkling water. She was laughing with Dr. Evelyn Vance as they watched five-year-old Lily lead a group of young children through a chaotic, joyous dance near the center of the floor.
Lily was wearing a bright yellow dress, her dark curls bouncing as she spun around, her laughter ringing out clear above the cello and violin.
Nora stood by the tall windows, wearing a breathtaking white silk dress that draped gracefully over her shoulders. Her hair was styled in soft waves, and she looked radiant, confident, and completely at peace.
Julian stepped up beside her, wrapping his arm securely around her waist. He pulled her against his side, resting his chin lightly against her head.
"Are you happy, Nora?" he asked softly.
Nora looked out at the crowded ballroom, at Cassandra cheering for Lily, at the doctors laughing, and at her daughter spinning beneath the chandeliers.
"I used to think happiness was something other people had," Nora admitted, turning her head to kiss Julian’s cheek. "Something you read about in books or saw in movies while you worked twelve-hour shifts. But tonight... tonight I feel like I'm finally awake."
"Look," Julian whispered, pointing toward the marble floor.
Lily had stopped dancing. She looked across the room, spotted Julian and Nora by the window, and came trotting over, her shiny black shoes tapping loudly against the floor.
"Mama! Daddy!" Lily called out, using the name she had proudly given Julian three months earlier. "Did you see my spin? I did the bluebird turn without stumbling!"
Julian crouched down and swept Lily up into his arms, tossing her gently in the air until she squealed with delight.
"It was the best bluebird turn I've ever seen," Julian declared, kissing her nose. "Your mama Claire would be so proud of you."

"She told me in my dream last night that she likes our new house," Lily said with absolute child confidence, wrapping her arms around Julian’s neck. "She said Daddy looks much better without his sad face."
Julian looked up at Nora, his eyes shining with unshed tears, and extended his hand to her. Nora took it, leaning into his side as they stood together beneath the light of the waterfall chandeliers.
