Chapter 7 - Darkness and Reckoning

The library was swallowed by absolute shadow.

The sound of a gunshot shattered the quiet—BANG—the muzzle flash illuminating Sergei's harsh face for a split second as the bullet tore through the bookshelf behind where Emma had been standing a fraction of a second before.

"Marcus! Down!" Emma’s voice echoed from the left.

Emma didn't need the room lights. She had spent two weeks studying the blueprints of the Vance estate, and she had spent three years training in dark-room tactical entry. She dropped low to the floor, rolling smoothly behind a heavy leather armchair as a second shot splintered the wood above her head.

She pulled a small night-vision monocular from her belt, pressed it to her right eye, and activated the green thermal display.

Sergei was moving toward the doorway, his weapon raised, searching the dark. Behind him, Victor Vance was scrambling on his hands and knees toward a hidden safe behind a painting near the desk.

Emma didn't target Sergei with lethal force—she didn't need to give the prosecution a messy self-defense homicide to clean up. She aimed her specialized pneumatic dart launcher at Sergei’s exposed neck and pulled the trigger.

THWIP.

A high-potency horse tranquilizer dart struck Sergei directly in the carotid artery.

Sergei let out a sharp gasp, his hand reaching up to tear the dart from his neck. He took two staggering steps forward, his gun slipping from his numb fingers, before slamming face-first onto the Persian rug, completely unconscious.

"Sergei?" Victor screamed from the darkness, his voice high and terrified. "Sergei! Where are you?"

The room lights suddenly flickered back on as the estate's emergency generator kicked in downstairs.

Victor blinked against the sudden brightness, looking up from the floor.

Standing directly over him was Sophia.

She wasn't holding a gun. She didn't need one. She was holding the black tablet, its screen displaying a real-time upload progress bar that read: "VANCE ENTERPRISES MAIN SERVER BACKUP — 100% COMPLETE — TRANSMITTED TO FEDERAL PROSECUTORS."

"How..." Victor gasped, his face gray with shock as he stared at the tablet. "How did you access the basement server?"

"Your IT manager isn't very loyal when he's offered two million dollars and immunity from federal prosecution," Marcus said, stepping out from behind the door, wiping blood from his knuckles with a handkerchief. "He opened the server room for us fifteen minutes ago."

Emma walked over, picking up Sergei’s gun, ejecting the magazine, and clearing the chamber before setting the weapon on the desk.

"Every transaction, Victor," Emma said, staring down at the old man sitting on the floor. "Every wire transfer to off-shore accounts, every illegal chemical shipment from your Jersey plant, and the original insurance fraud policy you took out on my sister Clara four years ago."

Victor’s mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water. "Clara... Clara Miller..."

"You thought she was just an orphan with no family who would be easily forgotten," Emma said, her voice dropping into a register so cold it seemed to drop the temperature of the room. "You thought my sister's life was worth three million dollars to pay off your son's failure. Look at me, Victor. Look at my face."

Victor looked up into Emma’s dark, unyielding eyes.

"I am the sister who stayed behind," Emma whispered. "And I have come to collect the debt."

The sound of police sirens, dozens of them, began to echo through the long driveway outside the mansion, red and blue lights flashing through the tall glass windows of the library, signaling the arrival of the federal authorities.

Victor Vance slumped against the legs of his mahogany desk, weeping silently, as the empire he had built on blood and lies dissolved into dust around him.
