Chapter 9 - The Clean Slate

The winter holidays of 2026 were the quietest Ethan and I had ever experienced—and the most beautiful. For the first time in our marriage, there was no chaotic family dinner where I was expected to sit at the bottom of the table while listening to Victoria complain about my lineage or Sabrina brag about her lifestyle.
Instead, the massive dining room of our Great Falls estate was filled with the warmth of real friendship. Marcus, Robert, Lisa, and a few close colleagues from the Vance Global Group gathered around the crackling fireplace on Christmas Eve. The smell of fresh pine, hot apple cider, and roasted garlic filled the air.
Arthur sat on a soft velvet blanket near the Christmas tree, trying to unwrap a massive box from his grandfather Robert. When the paper fell away, he let out a shriek of joy. It was a handcrafted wooden rocking horse, engraved with the words: Arthur Vance Whitaker — The First Day of a New Legacy.
"He loves it, Dad," Ethan smiled, walking over to place his hand on Robert’s shoulder.
Robert looked up, a single, heavy tear escaping his eye as he looked at his son and grandson. "I spent thirty years letting her dictate what a family should look like, Ethan. I thought wealth meant protection. I was wrong. True protection is the courage to stand up for the people who trust you."
I stood by the kitchen counter, watching them, feeling a profound sense of peace settle over my shoulders. Marcus walked up beside me, clinking his glass of champagne against mine.
"You look different, Clara," he said, his eyes warm. "The tension in your jaw... it’s completely gone."
"I feel like I’ve been holding my breath for three years, Grandpa," I said, looking at Arthur’s radiant, happy face. "And I finally just took my first real breath."
"The right people stay, Clara," Marcus said softly. "The people who love you don't require you to hide your name to protect theirs."
Later that night, after everyone had gone home and Arthur was fast asleep under his new flannel blankets, Ethan and I stood by the large bay window in the living room, watching the snow fall softly over the dark property.
"The new corporate registry was finalized this afternoon, Clara," Ethan whispered, wrapping his arms around my waist from behind, his chin resting comfortably on my shoulder. "The Whitaker Holdings name has been dissolved. From tomorrow morning, the company will operate under the title: Vance-Whitaker International Logistics."

I smiled, turning around in his arms to look into his beautiful, clear eyes. "A clean ledger, Mr. Whitaker."
"The cleanest ledger in the world, Mrs. Whitaker," he smiled, before leaning down to kiss me deeply under the silver light of the winter moon.
