Chapter 8 - The Shadow at the Gate

Despite the peace that had settled over the bluff, the ashes of the Mercer empire still held a lingering ember of malice.
Two weeks before the scheduled wedding, a heavy autumn rainstorm slammed into the Rhode Island coast, churning the Atlantic into a roiling, white-capped cauldron.
Inside the mansion, the warm lights flickered as sixty-mile-an-hour wind gusts rattled the high reinforced glass windows.
At 8:30 PM, Michael’s private phone rang sharply on his desk. It was Mark, the chief of his estate security detail.
"Boss," Mark’s voice was tense over the secure line. "We have an unauthorized vehicle parked at the lower gate near the public cliff path. Security cameras caught a male individual trying to bypass the perimeter fence."
Michael’s posture instantly stiffened, his eyes darkening. "Who is it?"
"It’s Julian Mercer," Mark revealed. "Charles and Lydia’s eldest son. The one who was living in London."
Eleanor, who was sitting near the fireplace reading a storybook to Grace and Faith, stopped reading. Her face lost its warm color.
Julian Mercer.
Julian was Daniel’s older half-brother—a cold, ruthless corporate gambler who had spent seven years managing the family’s offshore shell companies in Europe. Unlike his mother Lydia, who operated on spite and public arrogance, Julian was a calculating predator who understood numbers, blackmail, and silence.
"Stay inside with the girls," Michael commanded gently, turning to Eleanor.
"Michael, no," Eleanor said, standing up, her heart pounding with a sudden, icy dread. "Julian is dangerous. When Daniel was alive, Julian was the one who managed the shell companies that hid the construction safety funds! He knows how his parents operated!"
"He is trespassing on my property, Eleanor," Michael said, his voice dropping into that chilling, absolute register of authority. "And he is about to learn that the Anders estate does not welcome Mercers."
Michael walked out to the grand foyer, pulling on a heavy black oilskin coat. Mark and two armed security guards met him at the door.
They stepped out into the roaring storm, taking the private golf cart down the paved stone driveway toward the heavy wrought-iron security gates at the base of the bluff.
Standing outside the iron bars, drenched in the driving rain, was a tall man in a dark trench coat. Julian Mercer held a black leather briefcase under his arm, his wet hair plastered to his forehead, his face pale and sharp.
Michael stepped up to the gate, the rain streaming down his face, flanked by his guards.
"You have five seconds to step off my land, Mercer," Michael said, his voice cutting through the roar of the ocean wind like an iron blade. "Before my men arrest you for criminal trespass."
Julian Mercer offered a bitter, mocking smile through the iron bars. "Always the dramatic hero, aren't you, Anders? The famous virgin billionaire protecting the helpless widow."
"Say what you came to say," Michael commanded coldly. "Or say it to the state police."
Julian tapped the black leather briefcase under his arm. "I flew in from Heathrow four hours ago. My parents are sitting in a federal detention center because of your self-righteous crusade. But you made a fatal mistake, Anders."
Julian stepped closer to the iron bars, his eyes burning with malice.
"My mother was an amateur," Julian sneered. "She tried to intimidate Eleanor with slaps and fake debts. But I have the master servers from Mercer Holdings European operations. I have the original digital contracts signed by Daniel Hayes ten years ago when he first joined the firm."
Michael’s eyes narrowed. "What contracts?"
"Daniel Hayes wasn't just a poor, innocent crane operator, Anders," Julian lied smoothly, his voice dripping with venom. "Ten years ago, Daniel signed off on three major offshore equipment transfers in Grand Cayman. He was a co-conspirator in my father's tax evasion scheme! If I release these documents to the Department of Justice tomorrow morning, your heroic dead worker will be indicted posthumously as a federal felon! His name will be dragged through the mud, his reputation destroyed, and the trust fund you set up for those three girls will be frozen as proceeds of federal crime!"

Julian leaned his face against the iron bars, grinning like a demon.
"Give me fifty million dollars cash," Julian demanded, "and I walk away with the briefcase. Refuse... and I ruin Eleanor’s precious dead husband before your wedding morning."
