Chapter 5 - CHAPTER 4: THE PAPER TRAIL OF BLOOD

The revelation shattered the last remnants of my world.
Veronica hadn't entered my life by chance. Our meeting at a high-end charity gala twelve years ago—the whirlwind romance, the quick marriage—it had all been a orchestrated trap.
My phone rang, breaking the heavy silence of the room. It was Lucía.
"Alejandro, you need to see this," Lucía said, her tone grim. "I breached the encrypted server hidden inside your estate's library—the room your son mentioned."
"What did you find?" I asked, walking over to the window.
"Veronica and Rogelio aren't just funneling money," Lucía revealed. "They’ve been siphoning millions from your hospital network and construction projects into an offshore holding company registered in Saint Kitts. But it gets worse."
"Go on."
"The holding company isn't owned by Rogelio," Lucía said. "The primary beneficiary is a woman named Veronica Vance—your wife's maiden name. She’s been draining your empire since the day you married her. And Alejandro... there’s an insurance policy."
My heart stopped. "What kind of policy?"
"A key-man life insurance policy on you, valued at fifty million dollars," Lucía said quietly. "It has a double indemnity clause for accidental death. And the policy was updated three weeks ago—right around the time your mother miraculously reappeared."
Everything clicked into place with horrifying clarity.
My mother’s sudden appearance wasn't part of Veronica's plan; Ernesto and Lupita pushing her in that wheelbarrow had been an unexpected wildcard that threatened to expose the entire scheme. Veronica needed my mother gone and discredited immediately so she could proceed with the final phase of her plan: my "accidental" death.
"Lucía, where is Rogelio right now?" I demanded.
"Our GPS tracking showed his burner phone pinging near an private airstrip outside Toluca," Lucía replied. "He’s preparing to leave the country. But Veronica is still at your estate, burning documents in the back courtyard."
I turned to my mother, kneeling before her once more. "Mom, I am taking you to a safe house guarded by people I trust with my life. And then, I am going to end this."
My mother looked at me, her eyes filled with fear, but also a newfound strength. She reached into her worn bag and pulled out a small, tarnished silver key.

"Your father gave me this before he died," she whispered. "He said if anything ever happened to him, it belonged to a safety deposit box at the National Bank in Mexico City. He told me it contained the proof of what Rogelio did."
I took the key. "This ends tonight."
