CHAPTER 5 – EMPIRE OF FIRE

The north stairwell doors did not explode open this time.
They unlocked.
Quietly.
Like the building itself had decided to betray its owner.
Dante Caruso noticed it instantly.
That was the difference between a man who survived wars and a man who only inherited their aftermath—Dante didn’t react to noise.
He reacted to absence.
The absence of forced entry told him everything.
“Inside access,” he said flatly.
Rosa’s breath hitched behind him.
Valentina didn’t move.
But her eyes narrowed—just slightly.
Down the corridor, footsteps approached.
Measured. Confident. Unhurried.
Not intruders.
Not panicked attackers.
Someone who believed they belonged here.
The first man appeared at the end of the hallway.
Then another.
Then three more.
And when the leader stepped into the light, Rosa felt her stomach drop so sharply it nearly made her lose balance.
She knew him.
Not well.
But enough.
A man from Enzo Mancini’s inner circle.
A man who had once stood behind him at dinners, silent, observant, loyal.
Or so she thought.
“Marco…” she whispered.
The man smiled faintly.
“Rosa Mancini,” he said. “Still breathing.”
Dante didn’t lower his weapon.
“Identify yourself,” he said coldly.
Marco tilted his head slightly.
“You already know who I am,” he replied. “The question is whether you still think that matters.”
Valentina exhaled slowly behind Dante.
“So it is Mancini business,” she murmured.
Marco’s eyes flicked to her.
Then back to Rosa.
“Not business,” he corrected.
“Legacy.”
Rosa stepped back instinctively.
Dante shifted slightly in front of her without looking away from the approaching men.
“Say your purpose,” he ordered.
Marco’s smile widened just a fraction.
“To correct a mistake.”
A pause.
Then his gaze dropped to Rosa’s belly.
And stayed there.
Dante’s jaw tightened.
“You step one more inch forward,” Dante said quietly, “and you don’t leave this building.”
Marco chuckled softly.
“You think this is your building?” he asked. “You’re standing inside a transfer point.”
Dante’s eyes narrowed.
“A what?”
Marco lifted a small device in his hand.
A keycard reader.
Dante’s men shifted instantly.
Marco continued calmly.
“This club sits on encrypted Mancini financial routing lines. Old infrastructure. Hidden beneath your pretty marble and champagne.”
Valentina’s expression changed slightly.
She understood.
Rosa didn’t.
But she felt the shift in the air anyway.
Dante spoke slowly.
“You’re lying.”
Marco shook his head.
“No. I’m updating you.”
A pause.
Then he said it.
“Enzo didn’t just have a child.”
He looked at Rosa again.
“He had an inheritance protocol.”
Rosa’s throat tightened.
“What are you talking about?” she whispered.
Marco stepped forward one pace.
Dante raised his weapon immediately.
Marco didn’t stop.
“You were never just a wife,” he said to her. “You were a trigger condition.”
Rosa shook her head violently.
“No… Enzo loved me. He—he wouldn’t—”
Marco cut her off.
“Love has nothing to do with it.”
Silence.
Then he added:
“You were chosen.”
Valentina’s eyes sharpened.
“Chosen for what?” she asked.
Marco smiled faintly.
“To activate what remains of the Mancini empire.”
The words hit like a physical impact.
Rosa stumbled back.
Dante caught her wrist instantly without looking away from the threat.
Marco raised the device slightly.
“One signal from me,” he said calmly, “and every dormant Mancini account, every hidden asset, every buried contract across three states wakes up.”
A pause.
“And ownership transfers.”
Valentina exhaled sharply.
“That’s impossible,” she said.
Marco looked at her.
“It was impossible until she survived long enough to prove the bloodline continues.”
Rosa’s voice broke.
“I didn’t do anything…”
Marco’s expression softened slightly.
“That’s exactly why it works.”
Dante’s grip tightened slightly on his weapon.
“So you’re saying,” he said slowly, “she’s a key.”
Marco nodded.
“Yes.”
“And the lock?” Dante asked.
Marco’s eyes flicked briefly to Rosa’s belly.
“The child.”
Rosa froze completely.
The world tilted again.
“No,” she whispered. “No, that’s not real. That’s not—”
Dante turned slightly toward her for the first time.
And his voice was lower now.
Controlled.
“Did Enzo ever mention this?” he asked.
Rosa shook her head desperately.
“No. Never. He wanted a family, not… not this.”
Marco laughed softly.
“Of course he didn’t tell you,” he said. “If you knew, you would have disappeared earlier.”
Valentina’s gaze shifted rapidly between them.
“Dante,” she said sharply, “this is a takeover mechanism. If this activates inside your territory—”
“I know,” Dante interrupted.
He was still holding Rosa steady.
But his eyes had changed now.
Not softer.
Heavier.
Calculated.
Marco took another step forward.
“You can still hand her over,” he said casually. “No need to make this a war.”
Dante didn’t move.
“That was your mistake,” he said.
Marco frowned slightly.
“I didn’t make a mistake.”
Dante’s gaze sharpened.
“You assumed I care about your system.”
Silence.
Then Dante raised his weapon slightly.
“I care about control,” he said. “And she’s under mine now.”
Marco sighed.
“You don’t understand what you’re protecting.”
Dante answered immediately.
“I don’t care.”
And then—
Everything broke.
Marco pressed the device.
A deep mechanical hum echoed through the building.
Lights flickered.
Servers somewhere beneath the club activated.
Hidden systems waking up.
Valentina stepped back instinctively.
Rosa clutched her stomach.
Dante’s voice cut through the chaos.
“Shut it down.”
Marco shook his head.
“Too late.”
And then—
A gunshot.
But it didn’t come from Marco.
Or Dante.
It came from behind them.
One of Dante’s own men dropped to the floor.
Silence exploded into chaos.
“Traitor!” someone shouted.
Another shot.
Dante turned instantly, firing back into the corridor.
The space erupted.
Valentina grabbed Rosa and pulled her behind a pillar.
“Stay down!” she snapped.
Rosa was shaking now.
“I can’t—my baby—”
Valentina looked at her sharply.
“For once in your life, don’t move.”
Dante advanced through gunfire like it wasn’t there.
Precise.
Controlled.
Violent only when necessary.
Marco retreated slightly, still holding the device.
“This is already happening,” he called out. “You can’t stop what’s been written into the system!”
Dante fired once.
The shot hit the wall inches from Marco’s head.
“Watch me,” Dante said.
But then—
Valentina’s voice cut through from behind the pillar.
“Dante!”
He turned slightly.
Just enough.
And saw it.
One of his men—already inside the room earlier—moving toward Rosa.
Not shooting.
Not attacking Marco.
Moving toward her.
Access badge still visible on his wrist.
The insider.
The betrayal.
Rosa saw him too.
Her breath stopped.
The man raised his weapon.
But before he could fire—
Dante shot him.
Clean.
Immediate.
The man collapsed instantly.
Silence returned in fragments.
Marco stared.
Then smiled faintly again.
“You’re still losing,” he said softly.
Dante didn’t respond.
Because he wasn’t looking at Marco anymore.
He was looking at Rosa.
And something in his expression had changed again.
Because now he understood something worse than betrayal.
This wasn’t just an attack.
It was timing.
Someone had waited for her to be inside his control before activating everything.
Valentina stepped out from behind the pillar slowly.
“We need to contain this,” she said urgently. “If those systems fully activate—your entire empire gets exposed.”
Dante finally spoke.
“No.”
Valentina blinked. “No?”
Dante looked at Rosa.
And for the first time, his decision wasn’t about business.
“It doesn’t matter,” he said.
Rosa’s breath caught.
“What?” she whispered.
Dante stepped closer to her.
Not threatening now.
Absolute.
“Nothing happens to you,” he said.
Marco’s expression shifted slightly.
“You’re making an emotional decision,” he warned.
Dante turned his head slightly.
“No,” he said.
Then corrected himself:
“I’m making a final one.”
And in that moment—
Rosa understood something terrifying.
Dante Caruso had just chosen her.
Over the empire.
May you like
And someone, somewhere in Chicago—
was about to make him pay for it.
