Chapter 8 - The Falling Leaves

The winter was cold, but my house was warm.

The Sunday visits continued, but the dynamic had shifted. Elena didn't stand on the porch with a checklist. She stayed inside. Sometimes she even had a cup of coffee ready when I dropped them off. She didn't say much, but the tension was different. It wasn't hostile; it was cautious.

Graham was doing better. He had started working from home part-time so he could share the childcare duties. They were living on a tighter budget, but they seemed... lighter. They weren't trying to maintain the impossible standard anymore.

I spent my time with the orchids. They were thriving. I had learned that they needed very specific light, and that they would never bloom if you forced them. You had to provide the conditions, but you couldn't be the cause of the life inside them.

I had become my own climate.

On Thanksgiving, they invited me for dinner. Not to cook, not to help, not to watch the kids while they entertained guests. Just to be a guest.

I went.

I brought a salad.

I sat at the table.

When the kids spilled something, Elena didn't explode. She wiped it up herself.

I watched her, and I felt a flicker of sympathy. She was learning that life was messy. She was learning that the world didn't end because there was a stain on the tablecloth.

"Mom," Graham said, passing me the potatoes. "Thank you for coming."

"I'm glad to be here," I said.

And I was. Not because I was back to my old life, but because I had built a new one that was strong enough to exist alongside theirs without being consumed by it.
