Chapter 8 - The Shadow of the Past

With the corporate raid crushed and Hail Global's stock soaring to an all-time high, the dark clouds that had hung over Marcus Hail for years seemed to evaporate completely.
However, life has a way of testing newfound happiness before allowing it to fully root.
In late July, a new threat emerged—not from the corporate world of Midtown Manhattan, but from the forgotten past.
A man named Donald Vance (no relation to Victor or Harrison, but a ghost from Rosa’s former life) appeared in New York. Donald was Lily’s biological father—the man who had abandoned Rosa six years ago when she was pregnant, broke, and terrified.
Donald had spent the last five years in and out of state prison for petty theft and drug offenses. But after reading a sensationalized profile in Forbes magazine about Marcus Hail’s "miraculous recovery" and his close relationship with his new Estate Director, Donald smelled a massive payday.
Armed with a shady lawyer from Brooklyn, Donald filed an emergency custody petition in New York Family Court, demanding visitation rights and full joint custody of Lily, while simultaneously demanding three million dollars in "back-child-support and settlement fees" from Rosa, claiming she had unlawfully hidden his daughter from him.
The news hit Rosa like a physical blow.
She sat in the morning room of the mansion, clutching a cup of tea with trembling hands, staring at the court summons on the table.
"He doesn't want Lily," Rosa sobbed, tears splashing onto the polished mahogany table. "He never cared about her! He called her a mistake before she was even born! He just wants money from you, Marcus!"
Marcus walked into the room smoothly, leaning lightly on his cane. He walked over to the table, pulled out a chair, and sat down beside her.
He took the court papers, scanned them briefly with cold detachment, and then tossed them into the wastebasket.
"He won't get a single penny, Rosa," Marcus said, his voice dangerously calm. "And he will never touch a hair on Lily’s head."
"Marcus, the law favors biological parents in custody disputes!" Rosa cried out, grabbing his hand. "If he takes her even for a weekend... I don't know what I'll do! She doesn't even know who he is!"
Marcus squeezed her hand firmly, pulling her face toward his. "Rosa, look at me."
Rosa looked into his dark, resolute eyes.
"You spent six years fighting the world alone," Marcus said softly, his thumbs gently wiping away her tears. "You carried that baby through the rain, through hunger, through cold apartments, without a single person helping you. But you are not alone anymore. Do you understand me? I have four billion dollars, the best legal team in the Western Hemisphere, and a heart that belongs entirely to you and your daughter. Let him try."
Two days later, the preliminary custody hearing was held in a private chamber at the New York Family Court.
Donald sat at the respondent table wearing a rented suit that fit him poorly, smelling faintly of cheap cologne and tobacco. Beside him sat his sleazy attorney, who was grinning as if he had already won the lottery.
On the other side sat Rosa, Marcus, and Arthur Vance, accompanied by two top-tier family law specialists.
Donald leaned across the table, offering Rosa a greasy, arrogant smirk. "Hey, Rosa. Long time no see. Looking real fancy now that you’re playing house with a billionaire."
Rosa didn't look at him. She sat tall, her posture immaculate, holding Marcus’s hand firmly under the table.
The judge, a formidable, no-nonsense woman named Judge Eleanor Vance (ironically, no relation to any of the previous Vances), entered the room and took her bench.
"We are here regarding the petition of Mr. Donald Vance for paternity recognition and custody rights regarding the minor child, Lily Delgado," Judge Vance stated, opening the file. "Mr. Vance's council may speak."
Donald’s lawyer stood up proudly. "Your Honor, my client was cruelly deprived of his parental rights by Ms. Delgado, who fled Texas six years ago to hide his child in New York. My client has suffered immense emotional distress and simply wants to be a father to his precious daughter—and requests financial assistance from Ms. Delgado’s vast new estate to build a proper home for the child."
Judge Vance looked over her glasses at Donald. "Is that so?"
Arthur Vance stood up calmly from Marcus’s side.
"Your Honor," Arthur said smoothly. "We have submitted a sixty-page evidentiary filing to the court clerk this morning. It includes certified police records from Texas showing that Mr. Donald Vance was served with three separate abandonment notices in 2020, all of which he formally ignored."
Donald’s lawyer blinked. "Wait, what?"
"Furthermore," Arthur continued, pulling a thick stack of bank statements from his leather brief, "we have subpoenaed Mr. Vance’s bank records for the past five years. They indicate that he has paid zero dollars in child support, while actively maintaining active accounts with illegal gambling operations in Atlantic City."
Donald’s face turned pale. "Hey! That’s private information!"
"Silence, Mr. Vance!" Judge Vance barked, slamming her gavel.
"And finally, Your Honor," Arthur added, stepping forward with a signed affidavit. "We have a sworn statement from Mr. Vance’s roommate in Brooklyn, recorded yesterday afternoon, in which Mr. Vance explicitly stated—and I quote—‘I’m gonna squeeze fifty grand out of that billionaire maid, and then I’m dropping the kid off at state care.’"
The room went dead silent.
Donald jumped out of his chair, yelling furiously, "That’s a lie! He wiretapped me!"
"Sit down, sir!" Judge Vance shouted, her face dark with absolute fury. She looked at the evidence, then at Donald, her eyes flashing with utter contempt.
She picked up her stamp, slammed it onto the file with a heavy THUMP, and pointed a finger at Donald.
"Mr. Vance, your petition for custody is denied with prejudice," Judge Vance ruled, her voice cold as ice. "Furthermore, based on the evidence of attempted extortion and fraud presented today, I am issuing an immediate, permanent restraining order against you. If you step within five hundred feet of Ms. Delgado or Lily Delgado, you will be arrested instantly. And I am referring your bank records to the District Attorney for investigation into tax evasion."
Donald stood frozen, his mouth open, completely ruined.
Marcus stood up slowly, leaning on his silver-topped cane. He stepped past the table, walking right up to Donald.
Marcus leaned in close, his presence looming towering and terrifying over the petty criminal.
"If I ever see your face in New York again," Marcus whispered, his voice vibrating with absolute menace, "I won't call the judge. I'll buy your landlord, buy your employer, buy your debt, and throw you into the street with nothing but the shirt on your back. Get out of my sight."
May you like
Donald turned around and ran out of the courtroom like a frightened rabbit, leaving his lawyer behind.
Rosa buried her face in her hands, letting out a long, shuddering sob of pure, unadulterated relief. Marcus turned around, walked back to her, and pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly against his chest as she wept tears of safety and peace.
