Chapter 9 - The Final Verdict

The Federal Courthouse in downtown Chicago was sealed tighter than a military fortress. Helicopter spotlights swept the surrounding streets, while hundreds of armed federal marshals and city police guarded every entrance.

Inside Courtroom 402, the atmosphere was suffocating.

On the left side of the room sat Senator Victor Moretti. He looked like a hollow shadow of his former powerful self. His face was gray, his eyes sunken, his expensive tailored suit hanging loosely over his frame. Beside him sat his team of five top-tier defense attorneys, nervously shuffling papers.

On the right side sat the prosecution team, accompanied by me, Marco, and Victoria.

The heavy double doors at the back of the courtroom swung open.

The entire courtroom went dead silent.

Elena Vance stepped through the entrance.

She was dressed in a sharp, dignified navy blue suit, her dark hair pulled back into an elegant bun. She walked down the aisle with her head held high, her chin firm, her eyes fixed entirely on the judge’s bench.

She didn't look like a terrified maid hiding in the shadows anymore. She looked like a survivor.

She took her seat in the witness stand, placed her hand on the Bible, and swore her oath to tell the truth.

For the next three hours, Elena’s clear, unwavering voice carried across the silent courtroom. She detailed every detail of the night my family was murdered—the names, the times, the illegal wire transfers, and the master ledger.

When the prosecutor held up the black-and-gold pendant and the decrypted flash drive, Victor Moretti’s lead attorney didn't even attempt a cross-examination. There were no arguments left to make. The evidence was absolute, unbreakable, and devastating.

The judge looked down at Victor Moretti, his expression filled with cold disgust.

"Victor Moretti," the judge declared, his heavy wooden gavel resting in his hand. "In light of the overwhelming physical evidence and sworn eyewitness testimony presented today, this court orders you held without bail pending immediate transfer to a maximum-security federal facility to face charges of treason, mass murder, racketeering, and public corruption."

BANG!

The gavel struck the sound block like a thunderclap.

The courtroom erupted into cheers and media frenzy.

Federal marshals stepped forward, clicking heavy iron handcuffs around Victor Moretti’s wrists. As they dragged him away, he turned his head, looking at me one last time with eyes full of defeat and ruined ambition.

I didn't smile. I simply stood up, adjusted my jacket, and looked at Elena.

She sat in the witness box, tears streaming down her face—not tears of fear, but tears of fifteen years of buried pain finally being washed away.

The war was over.
