Chapter 4 - THE BOARDROOM BATTLE

The global headquarters of Whitmore Tech was a towering obelisk of black glass and chrome that dominated the Seattle skyline. At 9:00 AM the following morning, the atmosphere inside the executive boardroom on the eightieth floor was electric with anticipation.

Richard Whitmore sat at the head of the long glass table, surrounded by six of the company’s senior vice presidents. He had spent the entire night calling in favors, offering promotions, and promising massive stock options to anyone who would stand with him against "the widow’s hostile takeover."

“Listen to me carefully,” Richard whispered furiously to the Chief Operating Officer, a man named Thomas Vance. “When she walks in, we don’t give her the floor. We immediately introduce the resolution to suspend her voting rights due to a conflict of interest regarding the estate dispute. We have the legal paperwork ready. Just back me up.”

Thomas Vance looked nervous, sweating through his expensive silk tie. “Richard... she has the underlying shares. If we push too hard, she can liquidate our options.”

“She doesn't know how to liquidate a juice bar, Thomas!” Richard snapped. “She’s a housewife. Just do your job.”

The doors to the boardroom glided open silently.

I walked in, wearing a sharp, tailored black Givenchy suit, my hair pinned up into a flawless, professional crown. I didn’t carry a notebook or a laptop. I carried nothing but a secure encrypted flash drive between my fingers. Behind me walked Arthur Pendelton and two formidable-looking corporate attorneys from the city’s top firm.

The board members didn’t stand up. They stared at me with varying degrees of condescension and curiosity.

I didn’t wait for Richard to offer me a seat. I walked directly to the head of the table, stood right behind his chair, and looked down at him.

“You’re in my seat, Richard,” I said calmly.

Richard chuckled, refusing to move. “Evelyn, please. This is a corporate boardroom, not a kitchen. We are currently discussing high-level operational logistics for a Fortune 500 company. Why don't you sit at the back and let the professionals handle this?”

I didn't argue. I simply nodded to Arthur Pendelton.

Arthur stepped forward and plugged my flash drive into the central console. The massive digital screens on the wall immediately flickered, replacing the company’s quarterly earnings report with a list of personal banking transactions.

The names at the top of the list belonged to four of the vice presidents sitting at the table.

“Let’s talk about operational logistics, Richard,” I said, walking slowly down the length of the table, my eyes locking onto each executive one by one. “Mr. Vance... three months ago, you accepted a wire transfer of two million dollars from a competitor's shell company in exchange for a preliminary look at our next-generation quantum processing chip architecture. That is corporate espionage.”

Thomas Vance went completely white, his hands shaking as he tried to cover his tablet. “That’s... that’s a misinterpretation of a consulting fee!”

“And you, Mr. Fletcher,” I continued, pointing to the Head of Development. “You’ve been using company funds to finance a private estate in Cabo under the guise of an 'R&D facility'. I have the construction invoices right here.”

The room went dead silent. The vice presidents looked at each other, their faces filled with sheer terror. They realized in an instant that I hadn't spent the last eleven years just playing hostess at charity galas. I had been Alexander’s shadow auditor. I knew every dirty secret they had hidden in the dark.

“This meeting is no longer about my standing,” I announced, reaching the end of the table and turning back to face Richard. “This meeting is an extraordinary disciplinary hearing. As majority shareholder, I am exercising my right to instantly terminate the employment contracts of Thomas Vance and Gregory Fletcher for cause. Security is already waiting outside to escort you from the building.”

The two named executives stood up, panicking, looking at Richard for help. “Richard! You said you had this handled!”

Richard stood up, his face twisted in desperation. “Evelyn! You can't do this! You'll tank the stock! The market will panic if you fire the leadership team in one day!”

“The market will celebrate when they realize the dead weight is being cut,” I replied coldly. I looked at the remaining board members who hadn't been implicated. “The rest of you have a choice. You can either cooperate with the internal audit I am launching at noon, or you can join your colleagues on the sidewalk. Decide now.”

One by one, the remaining executives lowered their eyes, nodding in silent submission.

I turned my gaze back to Richard, who was trembling with a mixture of rage and humiliation.

“As for you, Richard... your title as Vice President of Special Projects is officially abolished. You are no longer an employee of Whitmore Tech. Your corporate ID is deactivated, your parking pass is canceled, and your access to the company gym is denied.”

I leaned in close, my voice dropping to a whisper that only he could hear.

“Tell Helena that the rent just went up.”
