Chapter 8 - The Berkshire Fortress

The drive from Gloucester into the high, dense forests of the Berkshire Mountains took nearly three hours under the cover of a thick pre-dawn fog.

The estate didn't look like a mobster’s hideout.

From the winding mountain road, it appeared to be a stunning, historic stone lodge built from dark granite and heavy timber, surrounded by towering pines and crystalline lakes. But as our convoy cleared the heavy iron perimeter gates, I noticed the subtle details: bulletproof triple-pane glass, concealed automated turret housings along the roofline, and guard towers disguised as rustic water towers.

Inside, the lodge was magnificent—soaring cathedral ceilings, massive stone fireplaces, and luxurious leather furniture, all heated by a geothermal system that kept the mountain cold at bay.

Elena immediately set up a tactical command center in the library, while I carried Alexander and Sofia upstairs to a beautifully furnished nursery that looked as if it had been prepared for them months ago.

For three days, the mountain fortress became our sanctuary.

While Viktor rested and coordinated his counter-offensive with Elena through secure satellite relays, I took full charge of the twins’ care. I established a proper feeding schedule, bathed them, and watched with a swelling heart as they began to blossom. Alexander developed a bubbly, energetic laugh, while Sofia became intensely curious, her grey eyes tracking my every move around the room.

Viktor spent every moment he could away from his strategy desk sitting in the nursery with us.

I watched as the feared crime boss learned how to change diapers, sing rough Italian lullabies his mother had taught him, and hold two bottles at once. The wall between us melted completely during those quiet, warm evenings by the nursery fireplace.

On the fourth night, I was sitting on the plush rug, playing with Sofia, when Viktor walked into the room wearing a dark sweater and trousers. His color was completely back, his wound healing rapidly under my careful monitoring.

He sat down beside me on the floor, leaning back against the sofa.

"You're good with them, Maya," Viktor said softly, watching Sofia crawl over my lap.

"I love them," I admitted, my voice thick with genuine affection. "It's strange... four days ago, I was crying over a late electric bill in a tiny apartment. Now, I can't imagine my life without these two."

Viktor turned his head, his deep amber eyes fixing on mine with an intensity that made my heart skip a beat.

"You don't have to imagine it," Viktor said quietly.

I looked at him, my breath catching in my throat.

"What do you mean?" I whispered.

"Leo’s network in Boston is crumbling," Viktor revealed, taking my hand in his. "My loyal captains have seized the South Boston terminals back. The O'Malley family pulled their hitmen off the streets two hours ago after I froze their bank accounts."

"So the war is over?" I asked.

"Not yet," Viktor said, his grip on my hand tightening slightly. "Leo is cornered. He’s holding out at my old compound in Quincy with twenty men. Tomorrow night, Elena and I are going back to Boston to finish this."

Fear—sharp, cold, and sickening—gripped my chest.

"You're going back into the fight?" I gasped. "Viktor, your side hasn't fully healed!"

"I have to end it, Maya," Viktor said firmly. "As long as Leo lives, my children will never be safe. You will never be safe. He tried to ruin your name. He tried to kill my blood. I have to put him down."

He raised his hand, his warm thumb softly tracing the line of my cheekbone.

"Promise me one thing," Viktor murmured, his voice dropping into a tender, intense whisper. "If I don't come back tomorrow night... take the twins to the private account I established for you in Switzerland. Elena has the codes. Live a long, beautiful life, Maya."

"Don't talk like that," I sobbed, tears spilling over my lashes. "You're coming back, Viktor. You hear me? You crawled into my diner bleeding to save these kids. You don't get to die now."

Viktor looked at me, a profound, fierce passion shining in his eyes.

Without another word, he leaned forward, cupped the back of my neck with his broad hand, and pressed his lips against mine.

The kiss was deep, fierce, and desperate—a collision of two broken souls who had found their home in the middle of a war. I wrapped my arms around his broad shoulders, pulling him closer, kissing him back with everything I had.

May you like

When he finally pulled back, his forehead rested against mine, his hot breath brushing my lips.

"I will come back to you, Maya," Viktor swore softly. "I promise."
