Chapter 4 - The Coward at the Door

"Stay inside," Noah snarled, turning toward the entrance like a dog protecting its home.

"Noah, stop," Emma said, her voice dropping into a register so cold and commanding that her brother froze in his tracks. "Let him come in."

Daniel stepped through the doorway of the abandoned bakery.

He was still wearing his tailored wedding tuxedo, though his tie was loosened, his jacket unbuttoned, and his hair mussed from nervous fingers. He looked small, pale, and thoroughly miserable under the dim moonlight streaming through the windows.

He stopped ten feet away from Emma, his eyes dropping to the dust and soot clinging to her white silk gown.

"Emma," Daniel whispered, his voice trembling. "Please. Talk to me."

Carol stepped forward, her face flushed with maternal rage. "You have nerve coming here, Daniel Whitmore! Get out before I call the sheriff!"

"Mrs. Harper, please," Daniel begged, holding his hands up defensively. "I just need five minutes with Emma. Just five minutes."

Emma walked past her mother and brother, stopping five feet from the man she was supposed to have pledged her life to four hours earlier.

"What do you want, Daniel?" Emma asked. Her voice was utterly calm. There were no tears, no screams, no desperation.

Daniel swallowed hard, his eyes searching her face. "I tried to call you a dozen times. Your phone was off. I drove to your house, then I thought... I remembered you talking about your grandmother's old shop."

"You came to explain?" Emma asked, raising a fine dark eyebrow.

"I... I want you to understand," Daniel stammered, stepping closer. "My mother... she had the bank documents, Emma. If I married you today, she was going to call in the primary mortgage on Whitmore Hardware by eight o'clock Monday morning. The store would have been bankrupted! My dad built that business! I couldn't let her destroy it!"

"So you let her destroy me instead," Emma said flatly.

Daniel flinched as if she had struck him across the mouth. "No! That's not what I wanted! I love you, Emma! I still love you!"

"Love?" Emma let out a short, hollow laugh that echoed off the high wooden rafters of the bakery. "Daniel, you didn't love me enough to warn me last night. You let me put on a gown my mother spent three months altering. You let my seventeen-year-old brother walk me down an aisle. You let your mother humiliate my dead father in front of two hundred people. That isn't love. That’s spineless self-preservation."

"We can still be together!" Daniel blurted out, reaching for her hand. "We don't have to get married right now! We can wait! I can talk to my mother, work out a compromise—"

Emma slapped his hand away with a sharp crack.

"Don't touch me," Emma said, her dark eyes flashing with a fierce, terrifying fury. "And don't ever speak my father's name or my family's name again."

Daniel stared at her, stunned. "Emma, please... I can't lose you."

"You already lost me, Daniel," Emma said, pointing a steady finger toward the open front door. "You traded me for a hardware store and your mother's allowance. Now go back to Maple Ridge and enjoy your inheritance."

Daniel stood frozen for a long moment, looking from Emma’s hardened expression to Noah’s clenched fists, and finally to Carol’s cold disgust. Realizing there was no forgiveness waiting for him in the dust of Ruth’s Hearth, he turned slowly and walked out into the night.

The heavy SUV engine started up, its headlights receding down the overgrown gravel drive until silence reclaimed the woods once more.

Emma turned back to her family.

"Noah," Emma said calmly, wiping a speck of dust from her cheek. "Go to the truck and get Dad's toolbox. We have work to do."
