Chapter 10 - The Written Story

That evening, after the last guest had departed and the sun sank low behind the Rocky Mountains, painting the sky in deep shades of purple, rose, and gold, the house fell into a magnificent, peaceful quiet.

I walked through the sunlit rooms of my mother’s home.

The soft breeze carried the scent of lavender through the open French doors of the terrace.

I sat down at the beautiful mahogany desk in my library, opening my laptop.

I opened a blank document.

For twenty-eight years, my story had been written by other people. It had been written by a father who saw me as an asset, a stepmother who saw me as an intruder, a brother who saw me as a servant, and a sister-in-law who wrote my name under “Childcare.”

I reached out, picked up a small framed photograph sitting beside my computer.

It was a picture of my mother, Clara, holding me when I was three years old, sitting in a field of sunflowers, both of us laughing under the bright summer sun.

I smiled at her face.

I placed my fingers over the keyboard.

And I began to write the first chapter of my new life:

Once upon a time, they left me off the family trip. They thought leaving me behind would keep me small, quiet, and obedient.

They didn't realize that by leaving me behind, they finally gave me the space to fly.

I hit save.

I closed the laptop, walked out onto the warm stone terrace, and leaned against the railing, watching the first stars appear over the mountain peaks.

I was no longer the backup option.

I was no longer the hidden solution.

I was no longer the unpaid nanny.

I was Jenna Miller.

I was my mother’s daughter.

And I was finally, completely, magnificently free.
