Chapter 10 - Legacy of Light

The sun began to set over the Vance estate, casting a breathtaking golden hour glow across the entire valley. The community bakery was closed for the evening, but the estate grounds were filled with life.
Dozens of local families—the very neighbors whose land had been threatened by Joel’s corporate greed—were gathered on the lawn for a celebration of the sanctuary’s first official harvest. Children laughed as they ran through the newly planted organic orchards, and the air was filled with music and the delicious aroma of a community feast.
Callie stood on the top step of the porch, looking out over the crowd. She felt a deep, profound sense of fulfillment. If she had stayed silent six months ago to avoid conflict, if she had let Joel scare her away with his legal threats, Geneva would be a forgotten number in a sterile New York ward, the land would still be poisoned, and a corrupt empire would still be thriving. Standing up to her family had been terrifying, but it had saved her soul and restored her family’s true legacy.
Sam walked up behind her, handing her a glass of sparkling apple cider. "A penny for your thoughts, kiddo."
"I was just thinking about Grandpa Elias," Callie said, clinking her glass against his. "I think he hid that key in the broken Virgin Mary because he knew that no matter how much fog took over Grandma’s mind, her love for this family and her sense of justice would eventually guide us to the truth."
"He knew exactly what he was doing," Sam agreed, looking out at the happy crowd. "And he knew you were the only one strong enough to handle it."
From inside the house, a soft, familiar sound echoed out into the evening air.
Click.
Callie and Sam turned around. Sitting in the parlor by the window, Geneva had found the old digital voice recorder on the side table. Instead of playing the grim recording about the toxic waste, she had somehow bypassed it and found an older, archived file from twenty years ago.
A younger, vibrant version of Elias’s voice filled the room, laughing warmly. "Geneva, stop fussing with my tie! The camera is already rolling. Just look into the lens and smile. I want our grandkids to see how beautiful you are today."
And then, a younger Geneva’s sweet, melodic voice laughed back. "Elias, I’m just making sure you look handsome for the family album. Our legacy isn't about the money or the logging company, you know. It’s about the love we leave behind in the hearts of our children."
Geneva sat by the window, a brilliant, serene smile on her face as she listened to the ghostly echo of her life's true treasure. She looked up as Callie stepped into the room, extending her hand.

"Come here, my sweet prize," Geneva whispered.
Callie walked over, taking her grandmother’s hand and holding it tightly against her heart. The safe deposit box was empty now, its secrets revealed and resolved. But the true inheritance—the legacy of light, courage, and unconditional love—was safe, secure, and thriving right here at home.
