Chapter 8 - The Contract of Hearts

By midnight, the estate was quiet once again.
The silver Bentley had been intercepted on the highway by Dante’s men twelve miles away. Victoria Romano was in federal custody, handed over anonymously to the FBI along with documents that would ensure she spent the rest of her natural life in a secure facility. The threat to the Moretti family was permanently extinguished.
Leo was sound asleep in his room, wrapped in three heavy weighted blankets, holding the small river stones in his hand.
I sat in the small library adjoining the east wing, sitting on a leather sofa near a roaring stone fireplace. I wore a heavy, oversized gray cashmere sweater that Mrs. Gable had given me, sipping a glass of warm tea. My blue dress was hanging in the guest suite bathroom, wrinkled and stained with Leo’s tears.
The door opened softly.
Dante stepped in. He had showered and changed into a plain black long-sleeve shirt and dark trousers. He looked exhausted, the lines around his eyes deeper, but the wild panic from earlier was entirely gone, replaced by a quiet, absolute clarity.
He walked over to the fireplace, leaning his arm against the heavy stone mantelpiece, staring into the flames.
"Carlo told me what happened," Dante said quietly. His voice was soft, devoid of his usual command. "He said you recognized the trap before anyone else did. He said you yelled at my guards, shut down the security lights, and stopped Leo’s breakdown before his mind shattered."
"I did what anyone who understands him would do," I said, my voice hoarse from the long day.
Dante turned his head, looking at me. The golden firelight danced across the sharp angles of his face, illuminating the dark amber of his eyes.
"No one else understands him, Clara," Dante said softly. "Not his doctors. Not his aunts. Not even me, most days. You came into this house in a blue dress, and in four weeks, you gave my son a voice he hasn't had since his mother died."
He walked away from the mantle, stepping slowly toward the sofa. He didn't sit beside me; he knelt on the Persian rug at my feet, bringing his dark head level with mine.
The terrifying mafia Don was kneeling before me, his large, scarred hands resting open on his knees.
"I didn't bring you here just to teach him music, Clara," Dante whispered, his voice laced with a deep, aching honesty that made my breath catch in my throat. "I brought you here because from the moment I saw you walk across that ballroom at my cousin's wedding, ignoring the guns, ignoring the danger, just to hold out your sleeve for a frightened boy... I knew I was looking at the only woman who could heal this broken house."
My heart hammered a frantic, heavy rhythm against my ribs. "Dante..."
"I know what I am," he continued, reaching out gently, his long, warm fingers finally touching my cheek, tracing the line of my jaw with breathtaking tenderness. "I know my world is violent. I know I carry blood on my hands that can never be washed away. But everything I own—this house, my empire, my life—is worthless if I cannot protect the people I love."
He paused, his amber eyes searching mine with a terrifying intensity.
"Mia’s transplant has been scheduled for next month," he whispered. "A donor match was cleared today at Columbia. She will live a long, healthy life, Clara. You never have to worry about medical bills again. You never have to play for strangers again."
Tears overflowed my eyes, spilling over his fingers. "Why are you doing all of this for us?"
"Because I love you," Dante said simply.
The words fell into the quiet room like a heavy gold coin dropped into deep water.
"I loved you when you stopped the music," he murmured, leaning closer, his breath warm against my lips. "I loved you when you held Leo under the piano. And I will love you until the day my heart stops beating in my chest. I don't offer you a clean life, Clara. But I offer you absolute devotion, complete protection, and a family that will worship the ground you walk on."
I looked into his eyes—the eyes of a man who had burned an empire to keep his son safe, a man who knelt before me in the quiet light of a fire, offering his heart with no conditions, no threats, and no lies.
I didn't answer with words.

I reached out, wrapped my arms around his broad, dark shoulders, and pulled him down to me, pressing my lips against his.
The kiss was slow, deep, and filled with a desperate, overwhelming warmth that consumed the coldness of the world outside. Dante let out a low growl of surrender, his arms wrapping around my waist, pulling me tight against his chest, holding me as if I were the only solid thing in an ocean of shadows.
