Chapter 9 - The Meeting of the Board

The following morning, the grand library of the Vance Tower was cold, the high windows displaying a panoramic view of the frozen Chicago river. A massive oak table sat in the center of the room, surrounded by twelve senior board members dressed in identical dark suits.
Julian Vance sat at the head of the table, his arms folded across his chest, his expression perfectly unreadable as his sister Victoria finished her presentation on the screen.
"The recent structural changes at Bellavere Holdings have created an unstable public narrative," Victoria argued, pointing to a digital clip of a local hospitality blog that had praised Emily’s new management style. "The media is focusing on the 'rag-to-riches' story of the new director, which draws unnecessary attention to Julian’s private life and his disconnect from the traditional family assets. Furthermore, we have reports that Dominic Moretti has been seen on the property multiple times since the transition."
"Dominic Moretti is a paying customer, Victoria," Julian said, his voice low and level. "He has been buying steak at that location since our father owned the shipping lines."
"He is a criminal element, Julian!" Victoria shouted. "And that girl—that waitress—she doesn't have the capacity to handle a block of this size. If the South Harbor project is reviewed by the city council next week, any connection to that restaurant could ruin the zoning approval!"
The heavy double doors of the library opened.
Emily Parker walked in. She wasn't wearing her director’s blazer; instead, she carried a thick leather portfolio filled with thirty years of original property deeds and shipping logs. Behind her followed Arthur Pendelton, his face bright with a predatory legal satisfaction.
"Miss Parker," Victoria said, her voice dripping with rage. "This is a private trustee meeting. You have no authority to be in this room."
"She has my authority, Victoria," Julian said smoothly, leaning back in his chair.
Emily walked up to the center of the table, opening her portfolio and sliding a set of certified financial documents in front of the senior board members.
"Over the last four days, with the help of Mr. Pendelton, I ran a full forensic audit of the Bellavere valet and delivery lines under the previous management," Emily said, her voice clear and resonant, carrying no hesitation. "We discovered that the five-dollar skimming fee Vanessa Cole was collecting wasn't going into her pocket alone. It was being routed through a dummy corporation registered in Delaware called Alpine Development."
Victoria’s face went instantly white under her expensive powder.
"Alpine Development," Emily continued, looking directly into Victoria’s panicked eyes, "is registered to a private bank account owned by you, Miss Vance. You weren't worried about the restaurant's reputation because of the zoning board. You were worried because Vanessa’s termination cut off the forty thousand dollars a month in undeclared cash you’ve been skimming from our family properties to pay off your personal real estate losses in Miami."
The board room fell into an absolute, suffocating silence. The senior trustees looked from the documents to Victoria, their expressions turning from professional indifference into deep, corporate horror.

Julian stood up slowly, his large frame completely dominating the room. He looked at his sister with a profound, chilling sorrow. "The family council is over, Victoria. You will resign your trusteeship by five o'clock tonight. If you don't, Arthur will hand these files to the federal trade commission before the bank closes."
He walked over to Emily, his hand moving to gently rest on her shoulder—a touch that was warm, steady, and filled with an absolute, unbreakable trust. "Thank you, Emily. You’ve cleared the house completely."
