Chapter 6 - The Forensic Audit

By the second week of January, the legal wave crashing over Eleanor and Chloe turned into a full-scale tsunami.

In his downtown law office, Charles Sterling sat behind his mahogany desk, reviewing a twelve-inch-thick stack of financial audit reports prepared by forensic accountants from Forensic Global Solutions.

Mark and I sat across from him, drinking warm coffee.

"It’s far worse than we initially thought, Maya," Charles said, pushing a summary document across the table. "When your father passed, your mother took immediate control of his secondary estate accounts under a temporary power of attorney that she forged three days after his funeral."

Mark closed his eyes, rubbing his temples. "She forged Dad’s signature after he died?!"

"She did," Charles confirmed dryly. "Over the past eighteen months, Eleanor systematically liquidated $800,000 of your father's municipal bonds. Where did that money go? Let’s look at the paper trail."

Charles pulled up a digital spreadsheet on his monitor.

"Four hundred thousand dollars went directly into Chloe’s boutique, Vance Luxury Apparel, which was operating at a massive loss due to Chloe using the business account as her personal piggy bank for trips to Paris, designer handbags, and luxury spa retreats."

"And the rest?" I asked.

"Two hundred thousand went into private legal retainers to cover up a hit-and-run accident Chloe caused in Chicago last summer," Charles revealed, his face darkening. "And the remaining two hundred thousand was paid directly to a private asset manager in the Cayman Islands to hide the money from probate court."

I leaned back in my chair, taking a slow, deep breath.

For my entire life, whenever I asked my mother for help with college tuition or basic art supplies, she would put her hand over her heart and sigh: "Maya, darling, money is so tight. Your father worked so hard, and we simply don't have extra funds to waste on your little hobbies."

Meanwhile, she was funneling over a million dollars into hiding my sister's criminal negligence and funding her luxury lifestyle.

"What does this mean for their criminal cases, Charles?" Mark asked.

"It means the State’s Attorney’s Office has upgraded the charges," Charles smiled, a cold, predatory light in his eyes. "In addition to the felony child battery charges, Eleanor and Chloe are now facing state grand larceny, wire fraud, forgery of judicial documents, and tax evasion charges."

"Can they plead out?" I asked.

"The District Attorney offered Eleanor a plea deal yesterday morning," Charles chuckled softly. "Ten years in state prison, full forfeiture of all personal assets, and a permanent restraining order. She threw a metal water cup at her attorney and demanded a jury trial."

I looked out the window at the snow falling gently over the city skyscrapers.

My mother’s hubris—the absolute belief that she was superior to the law, superior to her family, and entitled to destroy anyone who stood in her way—was going to ensure she spent the rest of her natural life behind a chain-link fence.
