Chapter 9 - The Family Reclaimed

Six months after the grand reopening, the winter sun was setting warm and golden over the hills of the ranch.

In the small, sunlit kitchen of the main manor, the smell of roasted chicken, garlic, and fresh bread filled the air.

Eleanor stood at the stove, stirring a large pot of gravy.

The kitchen, which had once been a cold, formal space where hired chefs cooked in silence under Margaret’s strict supervision, was now bursting with life, noise, and laughter.

Thirteen-year-old Lucas and eleven-year-old Clara were setting the long wooden dining table. Eight-year-old Mateo and six-year-old Hannah were playing with a golden retriever puppy on the rug by the fireplace.

Baby Sophie was sitting in a high chair, babbling happily while eating small pieces of cooked carrots.

Fifteen-year-old Samuel stepped into the kitchen, carrying a stack of leather bound college prospectuses.

"Mom," Samuel said, setting the papers on the counter beside her. "The counselor at school said I have enough credits to apply for the early agricultural business program at Texas A&M."

Eleanor turned around, wiping her hands on an apron. She looked at her eldest son—his cheek clear of any bruise, his eyes filled with ambition, confidence, and quiet maturity.

She pulled him into a tight, warm hug.

"Your father would be so proud of you, Sam," Eleanor whispered into his hair.

"He'd be proud of you, Mom," Samuel said softly, hugging her back. "You saved us."

"We saved each other, baby," Eleanor said, kissing his forehead.

The front doorbell rang—a soft, pleasant chime.

Clara ran to open the door, her cheerful voice echoing down the hallway: "Aunt Linda! Uncle David! You made it!"

Eleanor walked into the foyer, watching as her late husband Ethan’s younger sister, Linda—the only member of the Blackwood family who had refused to participate in Richard’s cruelty—walked in carrying gifts for the children.

"Eleanor," Linda said, her eyes glistening with emotion as she embraced Eleanor warmly. "Thank you for inviting us."

"You're family, Linda," Eleanor said sincerely. "This house is open to blood that carries love, not malice."
