Chapter 9 - The Trap Springing

By midnight, the forged ledger was complete.
Under Dmitry's instructions, Agent Miller used his secure federal credentials to upload the "recovered" Cyprus files directly to the FBI’s central evidence database, claiming he had seized them from a secure drop point on Michigan Avenue.
The trap was sprung.
Within hours, the automated systems of the Department of Justice flagged the names in the ledger. By 4:00 AM, the United States Attorney General had personally authorized emergency warrants.
The television in the Peninsula penthouse displayed breaking news reports: Massive federal raid underway at the FBI Chicago headquarters. High-ranking officials arrested in connection with a multi-billion dollar extortion and money laundering syndicate.
The screen showed images of federal agents in windbreakers carrying boxes of evidence out of the very building where Sofía had once planned to seek help. Among those in handcuffs was the Special Agent in Charge—the very man who had authorized her arrest.
Dmitry stood by the window, a glass of champagne in his hand, watching the snow fall over the chaotic city.
"It is over," he said, turning to Sofía. "The Ivanovs are gone. The New York threat has been neutralized by their own government. And your record, Ms. Benet, has been completely cleared. The federal prosecutors have officially listed you as a key confidential informant who helped expose the corruption within the bureau."
Sofía let out a long, shaky breath, her eyes filling with tears. For the first time in months, the heavy, suffocating weight in her chest began to lift.
"I can go home?" she asked, her voice trembling.
Dmitry walked over to her, setting his glass down. He looked at her with a quiet, profound respect.
"You can go anywhere you want, Sofía," he said. "Your apartment in Lincoln Park is yours again. Your job at KPMG... well, I suspect you might find public accounting a bit dry after this. But the choice is yours."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, black debit card, placing it on the table before her.
"This is an offshore account, completely clean, registered in a jurisdiction that does not exist on any map we drew tonight," Dmitry said. "It contains five million dollars. Consider it a consulting fee for your exceptional risk analysis."
Sofía looked at the card, then at Dmitry. "I can't take this."
"You earned it, Sofía," Dmitry said, his voice dropping to a warm whisper. "You saved my life, and you saved my empire. And more importantly, you showed me that there are still people in this world who cannot be broken by violence."

He stepped back, nodding to Lev. "Our cars are ready. We are leaving for Europe. If you ever need anything, Sofía... you know how to find the numbers."
With a final, elegant bow, Dmitry Chernov turned and walked out of the penthouse, his silent shadow Lev following close behind.
