Chapter 5 - The Trap at the Gala

The news swept through the financial headlines like wildfire over the next twenty-four hours.

“Billionaire Shipping Magnate Unfit to Lead?” “Tragedy and Instability at Dart Enterprises: Board Seeks Ouster.”

Julian Vance had executed his corporate coup with ruthless precision. By attacking Marcello’s mental stability through the lens of his daughter’s trauma, Vance had created enough panic among institutional investors to force an emergency vote.

On Wednesday night, forty-eight hours before the board vote, the annual New York Maritime Benevolent Gala was held at the Plaza Hotel. It was an event where all major shareholders, board members, and industry titans gathered.

Marcello had initially planned to skip the event, but Johana convinced him otherwise.

"If you hide in this penthouse, you give them exactly what they want," Johana insisted as she adjusted his black bow tie in his dressing room. "They want the world to believe you are broken. You need to walk into that ballroom and show them who you are."

Marcello looked at her reflection in the mirror. He reached up, placing his hands over hers on his collar.

"Come with me," he said softly.

Johana froze. "To the Gala? Marcello, I am just the nanny—"

"You are the heart of this family," Marcello interrupted firmly. "And I don't want to face those vultures without you by my side."

Two hours later, the doors of the Grand Ballroom at the Plaza Hotel opened, and Marcello Dart walked in.

He looked magnificent in a tailored black tuxedo, his jaw set, his presence dominating the room like a thunderstorm. Beside him walked Johana, wearing a sleek, midnight-blue silk gown that Marcello had ordered for her that afternoon. Her hair was swept up in an elegant chignon, her natural beauty and quiet dignity outshining the diamond-encrusted socialites around them.

A hush fell over the room as the crowd of executives and press parted.

Julian Vance was standing near the center bar, holding a crystal glass of scotch, surrounded by three key board members. When he saw Marcello enter—calm, composed, and striking—his smile faltered for a fraction of a second before he recovered his arrogant smirk.

Julian walked over, accompanied by Eleanor Vance, who looked radiant and predatory in a red velvet dress.

"Marcello," Julian said smoothly, raising his glass in a mock toast. "I am surprised to see you here. I assumed you were home... tending to your delicate personal matters."

"I am here to remind you who owns forty-two percent of this company, Julian," Marcello replied coldly, his voice easily carrying to the surrounding board members.

Eleanor stepped forward, her eyes scanning Johana with patronizing pity. "And you brought the domestic help as your date? How delightfully quaint, Marcello. Is this part of your new 'therapeutic regime'?"

Johana did not flinch. She stepped forward, looking Eleanor dead in the eye.

"Miss Vance, a true professional focuses on the well-being of their patient," Johana said, her voice clear and carrying absolute conviction. "A charlatan uses a child’s grief as a stepping stone for her brother’s corporate ambition."

Several nearby board members gasped quietly, murmuring among themselves. Eleanor’s face flushed bright red with fury.

"You arrogant little peasant," Eleanor hissed under her breath. "You have no idea what game you are playing."

"This isn't a game, Eleanor," Marcello said, stepping up beside Johana and placing a protective hand on the small of her back. "It's my life. And tomorrow morning at nine o'clock, when the board convenes, I will present the complete truth about your falsified medical reports."

Julian’s smirk vanished entirely, replaced by a dark, dangerous glint in his eyes.

"You think you have cards to play, Marcello?" Julian whispered, leaning in closer so only the three of them could hear. "Check your home security system. You left your daughter alone with a few security guards tonight. It would be a terrible tragedy if something... unexpected happened to her while you were busy playing the heroic CEO."

Marcello’s blood ran cold. His hand on Johana’s back tightened into a desperate grip.
