Chapter 10 - The Garden of Voices

One year later.

The spring sun hung warm and brilliant over Blackthorne House.

The manicured lawns overlooking the Hudson River were covered in vibrant blooms of white lilies, yellow daffodils, and wild pink roses. A grand white silk canopy had been set up on the cliffside lawn, decorated with glowing lanterns, crystal chandeliers, and ribbons of silver lace.

A hundred guests—former federal colleagues, legitimate business leaders, and close personal friends—sat in rows of white wooden chairs, their faces bright with happiness.

At the front of the altar stood Dominic Mercer.

He looked extraordinarily handsome in a tailored midnight-blue tuxedo, his hazel eyes locked onto the stone pathway leading down from the terrace.

Beside him stood eight-year-old Caleb, wearing a matching dark tuxedo and a bright red bow tie, holding a velvet ring pillow in his hands, his face beaming with pride.

The soft, romantic notes of a harp and cello began to play, flowing across the sunny lawn.

The crowd stood up in unison.

I stepped out onto the stone pathway, wearing an breathtaking ivory lace wedding gown with a flowing chapel train that swept gently over the green grass. My dark hair was styled in soft, elegant waves, held in place by a delicate silver hairpiece.

Walking beside me, holding my arm with pride, was my uncle—the only surviving member of my extended family, whom Dominic’s team had located and brought to New York three months ago.

I walked down the aisle, my eyes locked onto Dominic’s face.

I saw the tear that escaped his eye, tracking down his cheek as he watched me approach—the powerful man who ruled an empire, completely undone by the beauty of the woman walking toward him.

I reached the altar, taking Dominic’s hands in mine.

The priest stepped forward, his warm voice echoing softly through the spring air.

"We are gathered here today," the priest announced, "to join two souls who found each other not in peace, but in the storm. Two people who proved that love is stronger than fear, stronger than vengeance, and stronger than the darkest shadows of the past."

Dominic took my hands, his voice rich and deep as he spoke his vows.

"Evelyn," Dominic said, looking directly into my eyes. "Eight years ago, I thought my life was over. I thought my heart was a stone that would never feel warmth again. And then you stepped into my house, took three bullets for my son, and gave me back my soul. I promise to love you, to protect you, and to stand beside you through every storm, for all the days of my life."

I smiled, my own tears shining in the sunlight as I spoke my vows.

"Dominic," I promised, my voice ringing clear and true. "You gave me a fortress when I was running. You gave me a family when I had none. You showed me that I don't have to fight the world alone anymore. I give you my heart, my life, and my eternal love, forever."

Dominic pulled the silver ring from Caleb’s pillow, slipping it onto my finger, while I placed a heavy platinum band onto his.

"By the power vested in me," the priest declared, "I now pronounce you husband and wife!"

Dominic didn't wait. He pulled me into his arms, dipping me back gently over his arm, pressing his lips against mine in a deep, magnificent, joyous kiss!

The entire audience erupted into thunderous, ecstatic applause!

Caleb cheered, tossing a handful of white rose petals high into the air! The petals caught the river breeze, dancing over the lawn like white butterflies under the golden spring sun.

Dominic lifted me back up, holding my hand tight as we turned to face our family and friends, walking down the aisle together under the shower of white petals.

Three bullets had almost taken my life on a cold marble floor.

But those three bullets had brought me to the man who gave me a future, to the child who gave me a purpose, and to the home where I would never be invisible again.
