Chapter 5 - The Empty Shell on Maple Street

The yellow taxi screeched to a halt along the curb of 142 Maple Street at 3:15 PM.

The afternoon light was dying, casting long, stark shadows across the neighborhood. The temperature had dropped to freezing, and a light flurry of snow was beginning to dust the street.

Daniel burst out of the back seat of the cab before it had even fully stopped, his summer linen shirt utterly unsuited for the freezing Massachusetts air. Lorraine and Vanessa scrambled out after him, wrapped in thin shawls, their faces pale with anxiety and exhaustion from six hours of frantic travel.

“Pay the driver, Daniel!” Lorraine yelled, her voice trembling as she shivered in the cold.

“With what, Mom?!” Daniel shouted back, his voice cracking with hysteria. “My card was declined at the airport! I had to give him my watch as collateral!”

He didn't wait for her reply. He ran up the brick walkway toward the front porch.

His jaw dropped when he saw his belongings.

Sitting in the middle of the wet, snow-dusted lawn were his leather golf bags, his suits draped over plastic hangers that were bending in the wind, and six matching designer suitcases that belonged to Lorraine and Vanessa. Several of Lorraine’s delicate porcelain teacups had tipped out of a cardboard box and lay shattered against the cold concrete of the driveway.

“My china!” Lorraine shrieked, running forward and dropping to her knees on the frozen grass, gathering the broken porcelain pieces in her hands. “My mother’s antique china! That vicious, heartless monster!”

“Daniel, look at the door!” Vanessa pointed up at the porch.

Daniel rushed up the steps. The slick digital lock he had reprogrammed twenty-four hours ago was gone. In its place was a heavy, industrial-grade steel deadbolt assembly.

Slapped directly across the center of the dark wooden door was a neon-pink official sticker bearing bold, black letters:

NOTICE OF PRIVATE PROPERTY TRANSFER UNAUTHORIZED ENTRY IS STRILEY PROHIBITED BY STATE LAW. NEW OWNER: OAKRIDGE ASSET HOLDINGS LLC. ALL TRESPASSERS WILL BE ARRESTED IMMEDIATELY.

“No... no, no, no!” Daniel screamed, slamming his fists against the reinforced oak door. “Emma! Open the door! Emma! I know you’re in there! Open this damn door!”

The heavy door didn't budge. The house inside was pitch black, silent, and completely empty.

He ran around to the side of the house, peering through the low windows of the living room. His hands cupped around his eyes, pressing against the cold glass.

Inside, there was nothing. No furniture, no television, no rugs, no curtains. The hardwood floors gleamed in the dim light, spotless and bare, reflecting only the empty space where his life used to be.

“It’s gone...” Daniel whispered, dropping his hands, his chest heaving. “Everything is gone...”

A black sedan pulled up quietly along the curb behind the taxi.

A man in a sharp gray suit stepped out, holding a thick manila envelope under his arm. He walked up the driveway, stepping cleanly over Lorraine, who was still weeping on the grass over her broken teacups.

“Daniel Vance?” the man asked in a dry, professional voice.

Daniel turned around, his eyes bloodshot, his lips blue from the cold. “Who the hell are you? Are you with the buyer? Tell them this sale is illegal! This is my house!”

The man didn't answer. He opened the envelope, pulled out a thick stack of legal documents, and slapped them firmly against Daniel’s wet linen shirt.

“You have been formally served,” the process server said clearly. “Inside this packet, you will find a summons for Divorce Proceedings filed in the Probate and Family Court, a Petition for Full Physical and Legal Custody of Lily Reed, a Emergency Temporary Restraining Order prohibiting you from contacting Emma Reed or approaching her workplace, and a Notice of Intent to File Grand Larceny charges regarding stolen personal property.”

Daniel stared at the papers in his hand, the ink blurring under the falling snow flurries.

“Wait—” Daniel gasped, reaching out toward the man. “Where is she? Where is my daughter?!”

The process server backed away smoothly, opening his car door.

“Ms. Reed is in an undisclosed secure location,” the man said flatly. “Her attorneys suggested you read page twelve first. It outlines the timeline for you to remove your personal effects from this lawn before the city code enforcement hauls them to the dump at five o’clock.”

The sedan door slammed shut, and the process server drove away, leaving Daniel, Lorraine, and Vanessa standing on the freezing lawn, surrounded by their ruined luggage and the vast, hollow echo of their own arrogance.
