Chapter 8 - The Double Agent

Late on Thursday night, in a dimly lit parking garage beneath an abandoned shopping mall, Marcus stood beside his black SUV, his arms crossed over his chest.

Footsteps echoed softly against the concrete as Brent emerged from the shadows. He looked thin, ragged, and nervous, his eyes darting around the empty garage as if expecting a police strike team to drop from the ceiling.

"You've got three minutes, Brent," Marcus said, his voice cold and flat. "If my detail catches me meeting with you, I lose my job."

Brent stepped closer, holding up his hands to show he was unarmed. "Marcus, please... just hear me out. I know you think I’m a scumbag. I know you think I got what I deserved. But I know about your sister, Sarah."

Marcus’s eyes narrowed dangerously. He took a slow step forward, his massive frame towering over Brent. "If you mention my sister’s name again, I will break your jaw right here."

"I’m trying to help her!" Brent pleaded, pulling the USB drive from his pocket. "Look at this! This contains a rootkit payload. A group of investors wants Tessa’s new software destroyed before it launches. They are willing to pay one million dollars tax-free to whoever plugs this into her home server for ten minutes."

Marcus stopped. He looked at the USB drive in Brent’s hand, then up at Brent’s desperate, hollow face. "One million?"

"Yes!" Brent said, his voice rising in excitement. "Five hundred thousand upfront, paid to an offshore account in the Cayman Islands tonight, and five hundred thousand once the upload is verified! You can pay for Sarah’s treatment in Boston, Marcus! You can save your sister’s life!"

Marcus stared at the drive for a long, heavy ten seconds. His face was a mask of intense internal struggle. "Who is funding this?"

"I can't tell you that," Brent said quickly. "All you need to know is the money is real. I’ve already received two thousand a month just for acting as the go-between. Plug it in tonight, Marcus. Just ten minutes. Tessa has hundreds of millions of dollars! She won't even notice the loss until her insurance covers it! But your sister doesn't have time!"

Marcus slowly extended his hand. "Give me the drive."

Brent placed the metallic drive into Marcus’s palm, a triumphant smile spreading across his face. "Transfer instructions are coded on the drive. Once you plug it into her router, the offshore transfer initiates automatically."

Marcus looked down at the drive, then closed his fist around it tightly. "Consider it done."

Brent turned and hurried back toward the shadows, his heart soaring. He felt the rush of power returning to his veins for the first time in two years. He was going to destroy Tessa Vance. He was going to take her money, her company, and her daughter.

As Brent’s footsteps faded into the distance, Marcus reached into his coat pocket and pulled out his phone. He dialed a speed-dial number.

"Tessa," Marcus said, his voice completely calm and relaxed. "He took the bait. He handed over the payload just like you predicted."

On the forty-fifth floor of her downtown penthouse, Tessa sat at her desk, sipping a cup of black tea while monitoring a live satellite feed on her laptop screen.

"Did he mention Julian Mercer by name?" Tessa asked softly.

"No," Marcus replied, climbing back into his SUV. "He tried to play it cool, but the routing code on the drive matches the signature from Mercer Global’s server farm in Zurich. It’s Julian’s signature style."

Tessa let out a soft, low laugh—a sound of supreme, dark amusement. "Julian really thought he could bribe you? After I personally funded Sarah’s complete medical care through our corporate charity foundation six months ago?"

"He didn't do his research," Marcus said, a faint smile in his voice. "He assumed because the payment was routed through our foundation, I didn't know you were the one who signed off on the grant."

Tessa leaned back in her chair, looking at the USB drive’s digital fingerprint displayed on her secondary monitor.

"Deploy Protocol Zero, Marcus," Tessa commanded, her voice dropping into an icy silence. "Let the payload execute—on our decoy sandbox server. Trace the reverse-data connection straight back to Julian’s primary accounts in Zurich and Brent’s Cayman shell company."

"And the federal authorities?" Marcus asked.

"Jennifer is standing by with the Assistant United States Attorney," Tessa replied, her eyes narrowing as she watched the code execute safely inside an isolated virtual environment. "By midnight, Julian Mercer and Brent Hughes won't just be facing civil lawsuits. They will be facing federal charges for corporate espionage, conspiracy, and cyber-terrorism."

Tessa closed her laptop with a quiet, satisfying click.

She walked down the hallway to Ivy’s bedroom. The little girl was fast asleep, her tiny hand holding onto a soft plush rabbit. Tessa reached down, gently kissing her forehead, feeling the ultimate warmth of complete, absolute security.

"Sleep well, my darling," Tessa whispered softly. "The monsters are finally going to prison."
