Chapter 5 - The Unraveling

Four days later, the front door of the West 23rd Street apartment complex slammed open.

Ethan stumbled out of the elevator onto the penthouse floor, looking like a ghost of the polished financial consultant who had walked down the aisle a week earlier. His eyes were bloodshot, his skin was sunburnt and peeling, his linen suit was ruined, and he was dragging two heavy suitcases behind him.

Beside him walked Vanessa, her hair matted into an unruly bun, her eyes swollen, carrying a battered tote bag. They had spent forty-eight hours traveling across three continents on economy stand-by flights after Ethan’s remaining funds ran completely dry.

Ethan marched up to the door of apartment 8B, pulled out his brass key, and jammed it into the lock.

It wouldn't turn.

He tried again, twisting hard, his knuckles going white. The key refused to slide past the first pin.

"What the hell?" Ethan muttered, his voice hoarse. He pounded his fist against the heavy oak panel. "Clare! Clare, open the door!"

The electronic keypad above the handle illuminated, its tiny blue screen displaying a clear message: ACCESS DENIED. INVALID CREDENTIALS.

"Clare!" Ethan yelled louder, banging both palms against the wood. "Open this damn door! I know you’re in there! Stop playing these insane games!"

The door of the adjacent apartment—belonging to Mrs. Gable, a sharp-tongued, wealthy widow in her seventies who sat on the building’s co-op board—swung open.

"Stop that unseemly noise this instant, Ethan," Mrs. Gable snapped, leaning on her mahogany cane, looking at him with utter disgust. "You are making a spectacle of yourself."

"Mrs. Gable, my key isn't working!" Ethan panted, turning to her. "Clare changed the locks!"

"Of course she changed the locks," Mrs. Gable said coldly, crossing her arms. "The process server was here two days ago. We all know what you did, Ethan. Changing your wife’s honeymoon ticket for that," she added, flicking a contemptuous glance toward Vanessa, who shrank back against the wall. "The entire building board has been notified. You no longer have building access privileges. Building management has strict instructions from the court to escort you off the premises if you create a disturbance."

"This is my apartment!" Ethan shouted, his face flushing crimson.

"It is a co-op apartment registered solely under Clare’s name and her family’s trust, Ethan," Mrs. Gable corrected him with sharp precision. "You never contributed a single dollar to the down payment. Now, run along before I call the doorman to have you removed."

Before Ethan could respond, two tall men in dark suits stepped out of the elevator behind him. One of them held a thick Manila envelope.

"Ethan Vance?" the lead man asked.

Ethan turned, his chest heaving. "Who are you?"

"You’ve been served," the man said smoothly, stepping forward and handing him the legal documents. "These are preliminary motion papers for the dissolution of marriage, an emergency asset freezing order, and a notice of petition for an order of protection issued by the New York Supreme Court. Have a good day."

The process servers turned on their heels and stepped back into the elevator.

Ethan stood in the hallway, holding the heavy stack of legal papers, his hands shaking violently.

Vanessa grabbed his arm, her voice rising in frantic panic. "Ethan, what is happening? Where are we going to stay? I can't stay in a hotel, I don't have any money! My ex-boyfriend changed the locks on my place, too! You said we were coming back to your penthouse!"

Ethan turned to her, his composure finally shattering into pure, raw panic. "Shut up, Vanessa! Just shut up for one second!"

"Don't you dare talk to me like that!" Vanessa screamed, slapping his arm away. "You dragged me into this! You told me you would handle Clare! You told me she was weak and obsessed with you! You told me she would never leave you!"

"I didn't drag you anywhere!" Ethan yelled back, his voice echoing down the silent residential corridor. "You called me crying! You demanded that I prove I cared about you! You showed up at my wedding and humiliated my wife! I ruined my life trying to fix yours!"

"You ruined your own life because you’re an idiot!" Vanessa spat, tears streaming down her sunburnt face. "I’m leaving! I’m calling my sister!"

"With what money?" Ethan screamed as she turned and ran toward the service stairs, her heavy heels clicking wildly against the marble floor. "Vanessa! Come back here!"

She didn't turn back. The heavy fire door slammed shut behind her, leaving Ethan entirely alone in the quiet, carpeted hallway of the building he no longer had access to, holding the legal papers that signaled the absolute destruction of his former life.

He sank down onto his suitcase, burying his face in his trembling hands, the oppressive silence of the hallway suffocating him.

The woman who always fixed everything had turned off the lights. And Ethan was finally sitting in the dark.
