Chapter 3 - The Revocation

I pulled a thick, white envelope from my inner pocket. It bore the gold embossed seal of Gallagher Development Corp.

Harrison’s eyes caught the seal, and for the first time that evening, true, existential fear entered his expression.

"Dad..." Harrison stammered, taking a step toward me, his hands raised in a pleading gesture. "Dad, please. Not here. Not in front of everyone."

"You chose to make our family business a public circus in front of two hundred people today, Harrison," I said calmly, unspooling the red string attached to the envelope flap. "So we will settle our family business right here."

I pulled out a four-page legal document.

"For the past three years, Harrison, you have served as Vice President of Acquisitions at Gallagher Development," I read aloud, my voice clear and steady. "You received a base salary of three hundred and fifty thousand dollars, a company vehicle, a high-rise condominium on Michigan Avenue, and a five percent equity stake in our lakefront expansion project."

Chloe stopped weeping. Through her smeared mascara, her sharp eyes locked onto the document in my hands. Evelyn Sterling took a sharp breath, clutching her pearl necklace.

"However," I continued, looking directly at my son over the top of my reading glasses, "your employment contract contains a standard morality clause under Section 12-B. Any act of gross negligence, intentional destruction of company goodwill, or personal misconduct that brings disrepute to the Gallagher name results in immediate termination for cause."

"You can't fire me!" Harrison shouted, his face turning purple. "I'm your son! I'm the heir to the company!"

"You were my son's role model until today," I corrected him gently. "As of 4:00 PM this afternoon, the Board of Directors—which consists of myself, your mother, and our chief legal counsel—unanimously voted to terminate your employment at Gallagher Development Corp."

A loud, collective gasp went up from the Sterling family table.

"Furthermore," I added, turning to page three, "the Michigan Avenue condo is a corporate asset. You have forty-eight hours to vacate the premises. The keys to the 2025 Porsche Cayenne must be left with hotel security tonight."

"Thomas!" Evelyn Sterling shrieked, stepping fully into the center aisle. "You can't do this! They just got married! Chloe's family has made extensive financial plans based on Harrison's position in your company!"

"Then I suggest Chloe's family start covering those plans, Evelyn," I replied, without looking at her. "Because my wife and I are no longer funding Harrison's life."

"Dad! Please!" Harrison rushed forward, reaching out to grab my arm.

Before he could touch me, two security guards stepped between us, blocking his path.

Harrison stood there, stripped of his title, his salary, his home, and his standing, surrounded by the very high-society peers he had tried so desperately to impress. And beside him, glued to a chair in a torn, ruined gown, sat the woman he had joined in cruelty.

I turned my back on them, offering my arm to Martha.

"Come, Martha," I said softly, smiling down at my wife. "The air in this room has become foul. Let's go home."
