Chapter 8 - The Return to the Lake

Two months after the proposal, Dominic took Clarion on a private getaway to Lake Como, Italy, before their upcoming autumn wedding.

They stayed at Villa Rossi, an ancient, magnificent estate perched on the edge of the deep blue lake, surrounded by terraced gardens of olive trees, cypress, and blooming bougainvillea.

For two weeks, there were no business meetings, no lawyers, no reporters, and no security threats. It was a world of absolute tranquility.

On a warm afternoon, they sat on a stone terrace overlooking the shimmering water. Clarion was sketching ideas for a new children's shelter project on an iPad, while Dominic sat beside her, effortlessly peeling fresh peaches with a small knife and feeding sweet slices to her.

"You know," Clarion said softly, leaning her head on his shoulder as she looked out over the lake. "I used to look out the window of that Gold Coast penthouse at Lake Michigan every day. The water always looked so cold, dark, and hostile. It felt like a moat keeping me trapped."

Dominic wrapped his arm around her, kissing the top of her head. "And how does the water look now, tesoro?"

"Now," Clarion smiled, looking at the sunlit ripples of Lake Como, "it looks like endless possibility."

Dominic pulled a small leather document folder from his side table and placed it in her lap.

"What's this?" she asked.

"Open it."

Clarion untied the ribbon and opened the folder. Inside were the title deeds and architectural plans for Villa Rossi and forty acres of surrounding vineyard land.

At the bottom of the deed, her name was listed as the 100% sole owner: Clarion Miller-Rossi.

"Dominic..." she gasped, looking up at him in shock. "This estate has been in the Rossi family for four generations! You can't just give it to me!"

"It isn't a gift, Clarion," Dominic said gently, his eyes filled with profound tenderness. "It's a sanctuary. Whatever happens in Chicago, whatever battles we have to fight in the future, this place is yours. It is a home that no one can ever take from you, where no shadow can ever touch you."

Clarion felt a wave of deep, profound love wash over her. She turned, straddling his lap, and wrapped her arms around his neck, pressing her lips to his in a passionate, desperate kiss that conveyed everything words could never say.

"I love you, Dominic," she whispered against his lips. "I love you so much."

"I love you, my queen," Dominic replied softly. "More than life itself."

That night, in the master bedroom of the villa with the balcony doors open to the warm Mediterranean breeze and the soft moonlight reflecting off the lake, they made love with a gentle, fierce passion that erased every lingering memory of pain from Clarion’s past, replacing them forever with the warmth of true devotion.
