Chapter 7 - THE CORPORATE COUP
While Adrian was standing in a small bakery in Pennsylvania, a storm was brewing twelve hundred miles away at the corporate headquarters of Wolfe Industrial Group in downtown Chicago.
In the mahogany-paneled boardroom on the 54th floor, Victor Sterling—Adrian’s Chief Financial Officer—stood before the company's twelve-member Board of Directors.
Behind Victor, a massive projection screen displayed graphs showing the company's stock price dropping over the past seventy-two hours, along with media reports detailing Adrian’s sudden retreat to Bellweather.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the board," Victor announced loudly, his voice filled with calculated urgency. "Our Chairman and CEO, Adrian Wolfe, has abandoned his duties. He intentionally sabotaged a two-hundred-and-fifty-million-dollar defense acquisition, neglected his fiduciary responsibilities to our shareholders, and has spent four days hiding in a small town chasing an illegitimate family."
The board members murmured among themselves, looking at the financial reports with deep concern.
"According to Section 4B of our corporate bylaws," Victor continued, pulling a heavy legal document from his leather briefcase, "the board holds the legal authority to vote for an emergency removal of the Chief Executive Officer if he is deemed mentally incapacitated or unfit to govern the firm."
Standing in the corner of the boardroom, Marcus Vance—the firm’s chief legal counsel and a long-time ally of Adrian—stood up sharply.
"This is a hostile coup, Victor!" Marcus snapped. "Adrian is taking personal emergency leave! He has built this company from a three-billion-dollar enterprise into a twenty-four-billion-dollar global giant over the last ten years!"
"And he is destroying it in four days!" Victor yelled back. "Investors are panicking! The Mercer family has re-opened negotiations with our European rivals! We need a leader who is focused on the balance sheet, not a man playing house in a coal town!"
Victor raised his hand.
"I move for an immediate board vote to strip Adrian Wolfe of his CEO position and appoint myself as interim Chairman!" Victor declared.

Across the long table, six senior board members immediately raised their hands in agreement.
"We have a quorum," Victor smiled coldly. "The motion passes. Send a legal notice to Bellweather. Adrian Wolfe is no longer in control of Wolfe Industrial Group."
