Chapter 3 - The Shadow Nursery

The low, thrumming hum of the emergency generators vibrated through the floorboards of OR 3.

"What the hell just happened?" Dr. Cross yelled, stepping away from the operating table as red emergency LED strips cast harsh, bloody shadows across the room.

"The main power grid for the surgical wing was manually shut off from the basement breaker room," the scrub nurse reported, staring at her useless digital monitor screen.

Eleanor didn't wait to ask questions. She clutched baby Hope tightly against her chest, wrapping her in two extra warmed flannel blankets. She knew instantly what the blackout meant: Silas and Evelyn Sterling were creating chaos to cover their escape route.

"They locked the main doors!" Nurse Sarah reported, rattling the heavy double doors leading to the central hallway. "The magnetic locks defaulted to secure mode during the power failure!"

"The utility pass-through," Eleanor realized instantly. She pointed toward a small, narrow stainless-steel service door used for transferring sterilized instruments to the adjacent supply room. "It leads to the rear service corridor behind the scrub sinks."

"Eleanor, you can't go out there alone!" Dr. Cross warned, still managing Mara’s post-operative recovery under battery-powered task lights. "We don't know who is in the building!"

"If I stay here, they'll wait us out until the backup power fails completely," Eleanor said, her voice dropping into an absolute, unwavering calm. "Mara is safe here with you—they can't move a patient fresh out of major abdominal surgery. But they want this child. Jonathan, keep Mara stable. I'm taking Hope to the NICU vault."

Without waiting for an answer, Eleanor squeezed her frame through the narrow service hatch, holding baby Hope securely against her collarbone.

The rear service corridor was dark, cold, and smelled of ozone and floor wax.

Eleanor moved silently, her rubber-soled nursing shoes making no sound against the tile. She knew every inch of St. Anne’s Hospital—she had worked these halls for twenty years. She avoided the main elevators, knowing they were dead, and headed instead for the old laundry chute stairwell—a forgotten concrete passage built in the 1950s that bypassed the main security checkpoints.

As she reached the second-floor landing, she heard heavy, rushing footsteps above her.

"Find the midwife!" a harsh male voice echoed down the concrete stairwell. "She took the kid out through the back! Silas wants the baby at Bay 4 in three minutes!"

Eleanor pressed her back against the cold concrete wall, holding her breath. In her arms, baby Hope began to squirm, letting out a soft, tiny whimpering sound.

No, sweet girl, not now, Eleanor prayed silently.

Quickly, Eleanor slid her finger into the blanket and gently pressed her pinky finger against the baby’s lips. Hope instinctively caught the finger and began to suck quietly, her frantic whimpers fading back into silence.

The heavy footsteps stormed past the concrete door on the landing above, heading toward the main nursery wing.

Eleanor slipped through the second-floor door and ducked into an empty, disused storage room labeled PEDIATRIC ARCHIVES.

She clicked on a small penlight from her pocket. The room was packed with old filing cabinets, rolled-up blueprints, and archived paper medical charts dating back decades.

Sitting at a small desk in the corner was a young woman in a security uniform, frantically trying to connect a handheld radio. It was Officer Miller—a rookie guard from Blackridge who had been stationed at the hospital’s rear lobby.

"Miller!" Eleanor whispered urgently.

Miller jumped, drawing her flashlight and aiming it at Eleanor. "Midwife Hayes?! What is going on? The power went out, and my radio is picking up dead air!"

"Listen to me, Officer Miller," Eleanor said, stepping into the dim beam of the flashlight. "The transfer order for Mara Collins was a setup. Her father, Silas Collins, collaborated with an illegal adoption ring to steal this child. They have men inside the hospital right now."

Miller’s jaw dropped. "What?! But... but the sergeant signed the transfer papers!"

"The sergeant was lied to," Eleanor explained rapidly. "Warden Callahan was forced off the road to prevent her from stopping this. I need you to use your landline unit to call the State Police Special Investigations Unit. Tell them Detective Marcus Reyes needs to be dispatched to St. Anne’s immediately."

"Reyes?" Miller blinked. "The guy who brought down the Monroe shipping syndicate last year?"

"He’s the only law enforcement officer in this region who understands high-level legal corruption," Eleanor said, handing Miller a slip of paper with a direct satellite phone number. "Tell him Eleanor Hayes is holding a state witness’s child in the basement records office."

Before Miller could answer, the door to the archives room shattered inward with a violent CRACK.

The door frame splintered, and Vance Jr. stepped into the room, holding a heavy tactical flashlight and a suppressed 9mm pistol. Behind him stood Silas Collins.

"Well, well," Silas purred, shining his bright light straight into Eleanor’s eyes. "The brave little midwife. Hand over my granddaughter, Miss Hayes, before this gets messy."

Officer Miller instinctively reached for her sidearm. "Police! Drop your weapon!"

THWIP!

A soft, muffled gunshot echoed through the room.

Miller let out a sharp gasp, collapsing back against the filing cabinets, clutching her shoulder where blood immediately began to soak through her navy uniform.

"Miller!" Eleanor cried out.

"Next one goes through her neck," Silas said coldly, stepping over Miller’s legs and approaching Eleanor. "You’ve been a grand nuisance, Miss Hayes. But your little crusade ends here."

He held out his hands. "Give me the child."

Eleanor looked down at tiny Hope, sleeping peacefully against her chest, completely unaware of the barrel of the gun pointed at her head.

Then, Eleanor looked Silas straight in the eye.

"You are a pathetic, hollow monster," Eleanor said quietly.

May you like

"Perhaps," Silas smiled cruelly. "But I’m a rich one."

He reached out and snatched the bundle from Eleanor’s arms.
