Chapter 5: The Siege of the Homestead

At 4:00 a.m., the fog over the Spokane farm had turned into a thick, freezing sleet that coated the Ponderosa pines in ice. The farmhouse sat in the dark, its windows black, looking like an ancient, dead beast in the center of the field.

But the property wasn't empty.

Two blacked-out SUVs sat parked behind the old barn, their engines idling silently. Inside the kitchen, Marlene Merritt stood by the basement door, holding a high-powered industrial lantern, while Deputy Nate Carroll and two men in tactical gear used heavy sledgehammers to demolish the remaining concrete of the hidden room. They weren't just clearing the wall; they were filling the space with bags of quick-setting lime and dirt to destroy any forensic trace of Riley’s presence.

"Hurry up!" Marlene hissed, her designer coat covered in white mortar dust, her face distorted in a mask of panic. "Steven's corporate line was traced to an encrypted server in Idaho. The feds are going to be here by daybreak if we don't clear this site. If that lime doesn't set before they arrive, we're all going to a federal penitentiary!"

"Calm down, Marlene," Nate said, wiping sweat from his forehead despite the freezing cold. "The road blocks are still up on the highway. Even if Steven has a team, they can't get across the state line without my deputies flagging the vehicles. We have time."

"You don't have twenty seconds," a calm, amplified voice thundered from the driveway outside.

The high-powered floodlights of four armored FBI transport vehicles erupted through the sleet, illuminating the farmhouse until it looked like it was sitting under the midday sun. The red and blue strobe lights of twenty federal tactical units pulsed against the weathered white siding, turning the fog into a swirling prism of authority.

"Federal Agents! We have a warrant for the arrest of Marlene Merritt, Nate Carroll, and Thomas Miller for federal kidnapping, conspiracy, and civil rights violations! Drop your tools and step outside with your hands above your head!"

Inside the kitchen, Marlene screamed, dropping the lantern. The glass shattered against the floor, spilling kerosene that instantly caught fire against the dry, old linoleum.

"Nate! Do something!" she yelled, running toward the back door.

But the back door was already gone. Bruno and Steven’s extraction team, backed by six FBI tactical officers in full body armor, breached the frame with a hydraulic ram. Nate Carroll reached for his service weapon, but before his hand could clear the leather, Steven stepped through the smoke, his old crowbar swinging with absolute, calculated precision. The iron struck Nate’s wrist, sending the pistol clattering across the floor, followed instantly by Bruno pinning the deputy to the ground with a knee to his spine.

"It's over, Nate," Steven said, standing over his old friend, his breathing calm, his eyes steady. "The ledger is closed."

Marlene tried to slip past the officers toward the hallway, her fingers clawing at the wall, but two female federal agents intercepted her, forcing her arms behind her back and clicking the heavy steel cuffs into place around her manicured wrists.

"Steven, please!" she screamed, her voice cracking into a desperate, pathetic whine as the smoke from the kitchen fire began to fill the room. "I'm your sister! We survived June together! You can't let them do this to me! Think about the family name!"

Steven walked over to her, looking down into the face of the girl who had turned his childhood nightmare into a business model.

"The family name died with June, Marlene," Steven said softly. "I’m just here to clean up the trash."

He turned his back on her as the federal agents hauled her out into the freezing rain, her high heels sliding through the mud of the yard she had used to bury a child's life.
